On Friday, English rock band The Cure announced on social media that keyboardist-guitarist Perry Bamonte (who was also known by the nickname “Teddy”) had died from an unspecified illness over Christmas.
He had been with the band since 1990 when he replaced keyboardist Roger O’Donnell, after he had served as frontman Robert Smith‘s guitar tech since 1984. His first credited release with the band was 1992’s Wish.
The Cure fired him in 2005, but he returned in 2022. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.
Bamonte was originally from London, and was born in 1960. His bandmates described him as “quiet, intense, intuitive, constant and hugely creative” in the statement announcing his death.
