Loganair, the Scottish airline, has confirmed that it is withdrawing all of its operations from Dundee Airport, raising fresh concerns about the facility’s future.
The airline announced it would end services between the city and London Heathrow and to Shetland and Orkney on 23 October. It currently operates the London service twice a day during the week and once on Sundays.
Loganair announced in April that it intended the end the Dundee-London service on 18 September. That has been extended by a few weeks but will mean all operations ending.
The public service obligation (PSO) route has been supported by the local authority and the Scottish and UK governments since 2014.
The decision to withdraw has created uncertainty for more than 30 workers, from air traffic controllers to firefighters, security staff and baggage handlers.
Loganair said the London contract was “financially unsustainable” and it would help its Dundee-based employees explore alternative roles.
Frequent flyers have urged Loganair to consider reinstating the Dundee-London City route, with some saying it provided more convenient access to the financial centre.
A Loganair spokesperson said that the airline had not been able to identify an alternative London route that would allow it to remain sustainable.
