A Scottish company involved in digital learning solutions has developed an AI-led monitoring system to help weed out exam cheats.
The system tracks online examinations in real time using computer vision and behavioural analytics to detect suspicious activity.
It has been developed through research and development work at eCom Learning Solutions, supported by Scottish Enterprise.
The AI eProctoring solution will flag potential issues such as unusual eye movement patterns, repeated off-screen interactions, presence of secondary devices, or other anomalies that may indicate unauthorised assistance.
Unlike traditional online proctoring tools that depend heavily on human invigilators reviewing footage or static rule-based alerts, the new system is designed to operate autonomously at scale.
It applies machine learning models that adapt to different exam contexts and candidate behaviours, allowing for more dynamic and consistent monitoring.
According to the development team, the aim is not only to detect cheating after it happens, but to discourage it in real time through continuous oversight. The system generates alerts for exam administrators, who can then review flagged incidents and take appropriate action.
The rise of remote and hybrid learning has accelerated demand for digital assessment tools, but it has also created new vulnerabilities. Institutions have reported growing concerns over the use of secondary devices, messaging apps, and even emerging AI tools that can assist candidates during live assessments.
