British Gas is seeing changes in consumer behaviour

British Gas owner Centrica is cutting 1,300 jobs over the next two years as it overhauls its customer service and support teams.

The energy provider said a further 800 jobs would go on top of 500 role cuts announced last month. This will see a 14% reduction in the company’s customer operations workforce.

Centrica said it is a response to structural changes in customer behaviour, with customer contact falling sharply as about 90% choose digital methods of support.

The company continues to heavily invest in nuclear energy projects such as the Sizewell C nuclear power plant.

It reported an 18% drop in adjusted core profit for the six months to 30 June, mainly due to the impact of Spirit Energy asset disposals and production outages, with unfavourable weather and weak market conditions pressuring margins.

The board has declared an interim dividend is 2p per share.
