Specialist sports chain Greaves has been sold to the Frasers empire, ending a long history of family-owned independence for the Glasgow business.
Greaves, run by Sandy Greaves and his sister Anne Leslie, has been running sports stores in the city since 1930 and currently trades from a single store on Gordon Street.
It previously had a shop on Sauchiehall Street, known as Lumley’s, which the family acquired in 1960 and traded from until 2018. Frasers will continue to run the Gordon Street store under the Greaves brand, according to The Herald.
Documents lodged at Companies House show that Greaves changed its name to Clydesdale Sports Retail Limited in June.
The acquisition adds another brand to the Frasers Group, majority owned by former Rangers investor Mike Ashley, which owns the eponymous House of Fraser stores, Sports Direct, Evans Cycles and Flannels. It also owns Braehead shopping centre near Glasgow Airport and the Overgate in Dundee.
It has increased its stake in Hugo Boss to 30.28% after recently tabling a cash offer worth nearly €2 billion to acquire the German designer brand.
