Andy Burnham has promised to build a new political and economic model for Britain with early plans to tackle housing shortages and the cost of energy.
Speaking without notes and a lectern outside Number Ten, he said he would put “life’s essentials back under public control” in order to make them affordable again, and pledged to re-industralise and stabilise Britain.
Later this year, he will bring forward a 10-year plan for Britain, laying out the path of where he wants Britain to be. In the meantime he would give people “breathing space” to meet rising bills.
“This moment will be a circuit breaker for Britain,” he said, adding that cost of living measures will be outlined from tomorrow, along with how he would pay for them.
It is thought that this will include raising the threshold on the personal allowance which has been frozen at £12,570 for five years.
“We will help people to live well, investing in success rather than paying for failure,” he said.
He declared he would end rough sleeping across Britain, though commentators noted that a similar promise he set for Manchester has not been achieved.
He repeated Friday’s comments about the concentration of wealth and power in London, but offered no further comment beyond his commitment to more devolution and more public control of utilities.
