Ian Forgie: retiring

Prestwick Airport chief executive Ian Forgie will retire at the end of the week and hand over the reins of the business to operations director Jules Matteoni.

Mr Forgie, who joined the airport as chief financial officer, has overseen a return to profit, largely on the back of an increase in cargo business.

However, the ultimate goal of selling the facility remains elusive following the breakdown of talks with three potential buyers in eight years.

It will continue to be underpinned by the Scottish government which acquired it for £1 in 2013. New Economy, Transport and Tourism Secretary Stephen Flynn is due to visit in the coming weeks.

Mr Matteoni has worked at the airport for about 33 years and has played a key role in securing cargo busines with China via deals with Air China Cargo and China Southern Air Logistics.

Prestwick Airport now has 15 cargo flights per week connecting with China’s mainland on the back of growth in brands such as Temu, Shein and TikTok.

Cargo tonnage with China few about fourfold in the financial year to March 2026, compared with the prior 12 months, amid expectations of further growth this financial year.
