Verwer was involved in the launch last year of the Global Reit Alliance, but is also well known in the Australian property scene having been CEO of the Asia Pacific Real Assets Association and long-time former CEO of the Property Council of Australia.

He was a keynote speaker at the recent SA Reit Conference in Johannesburg in February. But a lot has changed since then, and the world has another war on its hands in the Middle East, which has rocked global markets and oil prices.

Last month at the conference, Verwer described SA as a “world-beater” in the real estate sector based on its total returns performance for 2025.

While the Reit sector continued its growth to the end of February, listed property has fallen since the start of March and the Middle East conflict, in line with the JSE wiping out most of its gains since the start of the year.
