Schwarz in Pittodrie frame as Dons explore options – Daily Business

Talks: Sandro Schwarz

Aberdeen have opened talks with German Sandro Schwarz as they look for a replacement for Jimmy Thelin.

The Dons had been closing in on former Saint-Etienne and Brann manager Eirik Horneland, only for chairman Dave Cormack to reveal the recruitment process had hit a snag due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

Horneland has indicated it would be the summer before he moved back into management, prompting Aberdeen to consider other options elsewhere.

While the Norwegian is still in the frame, Schwarz has been given the chance to impress the Pittodrie hierarchy and is set to be in attendance for the rearranged Premiership visit of Celtic tomorrow evening.

The 47-year-old was most recently with New York Red Bulls having left the MLS outfit in October.

He has plenty of experience with managerial spells at Dynamo Moscow, Hertha Berlin and Mainz also on his CV.

Aberdeen have previously tried the transatlantic managerial route, having brought in former player Stephen Glass from Atlanta United to replace Derek McInnes in March 2021. He was sacked 11 months later.

Celtic have also recently turned to the MLS to replace Brendan Rodgers, though former Columbus Crew boss Wilfried Nancy’s disastrous tenure at Parkhead was cut short after just eight games, the Frenchman managing just two wins in his 33 days in the hot seat.
