Scottish Design Exchange (SDX), the social enterprise supporting Scotland’s creative community, is relocating its Glasgow store from Buchanan Galleries to a new, larger home on Sauchiehall Street this Spring.
The move marks a significant milestone for SDX and is a boost for flagging Sauchiehall Street which has been plagued by empty units.
The new flagship space will give artists and designers more room to showcase their work, while expanding opportunities for in-store events, launches and creative experiences that connect creators directly with customers.
A key driver behind the relocation is the return of Foodies, SDX’s in-store food offering, which previously operated in Buchanan Galleries.
Foodies brings together independent Scottish producers, further strengthening SDX’s commitment to supporting local makers across multiple sectors.
SDX operates on a people-over-profit model, where money spent in-store goes directly to the creators. Artists pay a fixed monthly rent for their display space, which covers staffing and operational costs, while retaining 100% of their sales.
The relocation comes at a pivotal time for Glasgow’s city centre. Sauchiehall Street is currently undergoing a multi-million-pound investment through the Avenues programme, which aims to improve public spaces and pedestrian access.
The move also coincides with the recent passing of the Scottish Government’s Community Wealth Building Bill, which aims to retain more wealth within local communities through inclusive business models and stronger local supply chains.
Lynzi Leroy, founder of Scottish Design Exchange, said: “This move is about more than just a bigger shop; it’s about increasing our impact.
“The support we’ve received in Glasgow over the years has made our store a success. Moving to Sauchiehall Street allows us to be part of the regeneration of this historic street and continue giving back to the people of the city.
“We want to see Sauchiehall Street thrive, not just survive, and we’re proud to play our part in that transformation.”
SDX also operates a store on George Street in Edinburgh and The Tron Kirk Market on the Royal Mile.
New stores for Buchanan Galleries
Philly Express and American Dirty Soda have opened in Buchanan Galleries, bringing a new taste of the US to Glasgow.
Kathy Murdoch, centre director, said: “We’re passionate about creating a dynamic, welcoming destination where families can enjoy a full day of shopping alongside great food and drink.”
