An Aberdeenshire butcher with a Royal Warrant has put 120 jobs at risk after calling in advisers to consider its financial position.
Donald Russell in Inverurie is a supplier of premium meat products to restaurants and other businesses. It also operates a direct-to-consumer service through an online platform.
The company, established in 1974, has entered a 45-day collective redundancy consultation exercise “to explore all alternatives” including closure and selling the business.
Interim chief executive Matthew Flood stated: “Donald Russell has been a respected Aberdeenshire business for more than 50 years, but the company has faced mounting challenges in recent years.
“Unprecedented volatility in meat prices, unpredictable energy costs and the rising costs of doing business have created a perfect storm. That has left the business unable to continue trading in its current form.”
He admitted the company is “planning realistically for closure and our absolute priority is to support our colleagues through this difficult period with transparency, dignity and all the assistance we can provide.”
Donald Russell closed its cold storage distribution centre in Kintore last August, with about 70 people losing their jobs.
