Student flats, EBC’s targets, funding for water firm – Daily Business

The proposed flats have been reduced in height

Glasgow City Council has approved plans for 152 student flats despite concerns over their height and impact on a conservation area.

Situated off Otago Street along the River Kelvin, the development site has been derelict for over 40 years.

The 96 studio flats and 56 ensuite rooms are arranged in three blocks of six to eight storeys and are expected to open by September 2028.

Residents expressed concern about the height of the buildings, the volume of car parking, and impact on the Hillhead Conservation area.

The planning committee acknowledged these concerns, and the concentration of new-build student homes in the area, but approved the scheme after modifications to reduce the height of the buildings and improve daylighting for neighbours.

Edinburgh Boiler Company targets acquisitions

The Edinburgh Boiler Company (EBC) is aiming to double turnover to £20 million as it targets growth by acquisition.

It credits a successful transition into renewables for another strong financial performance which will see record revenue for the third consecutive year.

“We are ahead of budget as we come towards the end of our current financial year,” said Dougie Bell, who is coming up for his second anniversary as managing director after Mark Glasgow stepped into the role of EBC chairman in January 2024.

“We are going to hit our target of £10m, which we always felt was realistic given how well the business moved into the renewable energy space.

“We have big plans for the future and want to move as fast as possible and have identified that growth by acquisition is the path forward for us.”

The company is looking acquire companies in the £2m-£8m turnover range.

Funding for water recycling firm

Cascade Water Products, a pioneering Scottish water technology company, has secured angel investment of up to £350,000 as it commercialises its recycling system.

The investment, from a group of European and American high net worth investors, will enable Cascade to accelerate production and initial targeting holiday resorts, hospitality venues, homes with private water supplies, and other residential properties.

Founded by Angus couple Carolyn Hogg and Peter Holdsworth, Cascade represents the culmination of more than a decade of research and development.

What began as an engineering challenge at their kitchen table has evolved into a proven technology that addresses water efficiency and scarcity.

The technology is particularly relevant for properties with private water supplies, houses in multiple occupation (HMOs), rental properties including social housing, and holiday accommodation where water efficiency directly impacts operational costs and environmental credentials.
