Three dead and six hurt after driver hits cyclist and crashes car into LA store | Los Angeles

Three people were killed and six others were hurt after a 92-year-old driver collided with a cyclist and then slammed her car into a grocery store on Thursday afternoon in Los Angeles, authorities said.

The crash was reported shortly after noon at a 99 Ranch Market in the city’s Westwood neighborhood, according Los Angeles fire department spokesperson Lyndsey Lantz.

Three victims, some of whom were trapped beneath the vehicle, died at the scene, Lantz said.

According to the fire department, the fatalities were two men, aged 55 and 30, and one woman, 42, all of whom were inside the grocery store’s bakery when the car crashed through the market’s glass-walled front.

A subsequent incident report from the fire department said four people were taken to hospitals – two 35-year-old men in serious condition and two other men, aged 38 and 37, with minor injuries. Two other people declined transport against medical advice.

Capt Anthony Espinoza of the Los Angeles police department told reporters the driver of a Toyota Prius lost control after hitting the bicyclist and then swerved into the bakery section of the market.

The driver is 92 years old, Lantz told the Associated Press. She was cooperating with investigators and undergoing a medical evaluation, said officials at the scene. The condition of the bicyclist wasn’t immediately known.

Video of the scene from TV news helicopters showed a silver sedan fully inside the store on Westwood Boulevard.

There was large police and fire department response with a triage area set up to treat patients outside the store.

The crash occurred near the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles. None of those killed or injured were university students, Espinoza said.

The city’s department of building and safety concluded after an inspection that there is no ongoing structural instability from the crash.
