BrewDog co-founder James Watt is said to be interested in buying back control of the brewery and pubs chain he set up with Martin Dickie in 2007.

They bagged £213 million in 2017 selling a 22.5% stake to US-based investment firm TSG Consumer Partners which is believed to be working with advisers on its future options.

Reports in the trade press suggest Mr Watt is interested in a return to the Aberdeenshire business. Brewdog “declined to comment”.

In October the company announced job cuts across “several departments” as the new management team attempts to turn round the business.

This came weeks after it announced a £36.6 million loss in 2024, down from £59.2m in the previous year and TSG has agreed to lend the company a further £20m.

Unite the union said the job losses were a “deeply worrying sign” for the company’s future. It has announced a number of pub closures in the UK and the US.

Mr Dickie has left the company and set up a new business, while Mr Watt quit as chief executive but retains the role of “captain”. He is engaged in several ventures including attempts to help other entrepreneurs.

Brewdog managing director James Taylor recently said he was enacting “sensible financial discipline” with regard to running the company.
