Edinburgh Airport has welcomed a record of 16.98 million passengers in a single year – a milestone achieved for the first time at a Scottish airport.
The growth comes as the airport introduced new routes serving Beijing, Boston, Montreal and Philadelphia.
New routes and airlines for 2026 include American Airlines adding New York to its destinations, as well as extending its Philadelphia service into the winter season. Luxair is entering the Scottish market with its seasonal route to Luxembourg.
A significant expansion project is also in the pipeline for this year.
Gordon Dewar, dhief executive of Edinburgh Airport, said: “The past year has been a strong one for Edinburgh Airport, reflecting the continued appetite for travel and tourism, both to and from
Scotland, with new European and transatlantic routes further strengthening our connectivity.”
Orkney wind farm on hold
A huge offshore wind farm development west of Orkney, which was expected to power two million homes by the end of the decade, has been put on hold after the developer said transmission charges are too high.
West of Orkney is being developed by a consortium involving Corio Generation, TotalEnergies and Renewables Infrastructure Development Group. It is about half the size of the proposed development at Berwick Bank, off East Lothian, which could become the world’s largest offshore wind farm.
CEO of Scottish Renewables Claire Mack said “there are many in the same boat.”, describing the situation caused by transmission charges as “deeply worrying.”
SNP MSP for the Highlands and Islands Emma Roddick said: “The UK energy market is broken and is penalising Scotland’s energy producers simply for being in Scotland.”
The UK government said it is considering the charges as part of a wider review.

This move reinforces EastWorks as a Deep Tech Hub at the heart of Clyde Gateway Innovation, where a cluster of pioneering businesses is already thriving.
Companies such as Utopi, HyImpulse, Acumen Cyber, BRE and Verdant Energy have located to Clyde Gateway which led the transformation of EastWorks – a former Victorian gas purifier shed.
Situated next to Dalmarnock railway station, EastWorks is part of Clyde Gateway’s plan to make Dalmarnock Cross a focal point for a mixed-use neighbourhood of homes and commercial space.
