{"id":9894,"date":"2026-01-06T17:06:01","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T17:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=9894"},"modified":"2026-01-06T17:06:01","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T17:06:01","slug":"commonwealth-fusion-systems-installs-reactor-magnet-lands-deal-with-nvidia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=9894","title":{"rendered":"Commonwealth Fusion Systems installs reactor magnet, lands deal with Nvidia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) said on Tuesday at <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/storyline\/ces-2026-follow-live-as-nvidia-lego-amd-amazon-and-more-make-their-big-reveals\/\">CES 2026<\/a> that it had installed the first magnet in its Sparc fusion reactor, the demonstration device that it hopes to turn on next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The magnet is the first of 18 that, when the reactor is complete, will create a doughnut-like shape that will produce a powerful magnetic field to confine and compress superheated plasma. If all goes well, that plasma will release more energy than it takes to heat and compress it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After decades of promise and delay, fusion power appears to be just around the corner \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/12\/31\/every-fusion-startup-that-has-raised-over-100m\/\">CFS and its competitors<\/a> are locked in a race to deliver the first electrons to the grid sometime in the early 2030s. The magnets themselves weigh about 24 tons each and can generate a 20 tesla magnetic field, about 13 times stronger than a typical MRI machine. \u201cIt\u2019s the type of magnet that you could use to, like, lift an aircraft carrier,\u201d Mumgaard said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To hit that strength, the magnets will be cooled to -253? C (-423? F) so they can safely conduct over 30,000 amps of current. Inside the doughnut, plasma will be burning at more than 100 million degrees C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To work out as many kinks as possible before Sparc is turned on, CFS said on Tuesday that it is working with Nvidia and Siemens to develop a digital twin of the reactor. With the digital twin, he said, \u201cthese are no longer isolated simulations that are just used for design. CFS has raised nearly $3 billion to date, including an <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/08\/28\/nvidia-google-and-bill-gates-help-commonwealth-fusion-systems-raise-863m\/\">$863 million Series B2<\/a> round in August that included investments from Nvidia, Google, and nearly three dozen other investors. The company\u2019s first commercial-scale power plant, Arc, will be the first of its kind.
