While announcing Bolsonaro&#8217;s sentence on Thursday night, Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the former president had attempted to destroy &#8220;the essential pillars of the democratic rule-of-law state&#8221;, the consequences of which would have been the return of dictatorial rule in the country, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikinews.org\/wiki\/The_Guardian\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"The Guardian\">The Guardian<\/a><\/i> reported. Justice <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C%C3%A1rmen_L%C3%BAcia\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:C\u00e1rmen L\u00facia\">C\u00e1rmen L\u00facia<\/a><\/span> likewise labelled it an effort to &#8220;sow the malignant seed of anti-democracy&#8221;, but highlighted the continuing resilience of the democratic institutions.\n<\/p>\n<p>According to prosecutors, part of the alleged plan involved assassinating then president-elect <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikinews.org\/wiki\/Luiz_In%C3%A1cio_Lula_da_Silva\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva\">Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva<\/a>, his Vice President <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geraldo_Alckmin\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Geraldo Alckmin\">Geraldo Alckmin<\/a><\/span>, and Supreme Court Justice <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexandre_de_Moraes\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Alexandre de Moraes\">Alexandre de Moraes<\/a><\/span>, through the use of explosives, poison or weapons of war. Justice Luiz Fux said there was \u201cabsolutely no proof\u201d Bolsonaro was aware of or involved in such a plan.\n<\/p>\n<p>In sharp disagreement with their colleagues, Justice <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luiz_Fux\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Luiz Fux\">Luiz Fux<\/a><\/span> voted to acquit Bolsonaro on all charges on September 10, arguing there was no evidence he was aware of the supposed plot or had attempted to orchestrate a coup, and that the court lacked jurisdiction over the case.\n<\/p>\n<p>Seven Bolsonaro co-conspirators were also convicted, namely former <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ministry_of_Defence_(Brazil)\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Ministry of Defence (Brazil)\">defence ministers<\/a><\/span> <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walter_Braga_Netto\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Walter Braga Netto\">Walter Braga Netto<\/a><\/span> and <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paulo_S%C3%A9rgio_Nogueira_de_Oliveira\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Paulo S\u00e9rgio Nogueira de Oliveira\">Paulo S\u00e9rgio Nogueira de Oliveira<\/a><\/span>, former aide-de-camp <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mauro_Cid\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Mauro Cid\">Mauro Cid<\/a><\/span>, retired general <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Augusto_Heleno\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Augusto Heleno\">Augusto Heleno<\/a><\/span>, former <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ministry_of_Justice_and_Public_Security_(Brazil)\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Ministry of Justice and Public Security (Brazil)\">justice minister<\/a><\/span> <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anderson_Torres\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Anderson Torres\">Anderson Torres<\/a><\/span>, former <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commander_of_the_Brazilian_Navy\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Commander of the Brazilian Navy\">naval commander<\/a><\/span> <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Almir_Garnier_Santos\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Almir Garnier Santos\">Almir Garnier Santos<\/a><\/span>, and former police officer <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexandre_Ramagem\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Alexandre Ramagem\">Alexandre Ramagem<\/a><\/span>, <i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikinews.org\/wiki\/Al-Jazeera\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Al-Jazeera\">Al-Jazeera<\/a><\/i> reported.\n<\/p>\n<p>Bolsonaro and the seven other defendants denied any of the allegations. Bolsonaro\u2019s lawyers expressed their intention to appeal his conviction and sentence before the full Supreme Court, which is currently composed of eleven justices, according to <i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikinews.org\/wiki\/Associated_Press\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Associated Press\">AP<\/a><\/i>. The <i>AP<\/i> also quoted law professor Rafael Mafei, who said it was \u201cunlikely, but not impossible\u201d that an appeal would reach the full court.\n<\/p>\n<p>Bolsonaro, who is under house arrest in Brazil&#8217;s capital, is not expected to face prison until all legal avenues are exhausted.\n<\/p>\n<p>Following the ruling, thousands of Brazilians, including members of the LGBTQ+ and Indigenous communities, gathered in the streets of Bras\u00edlia, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikinews.org\/wiki\/Rio_de_Janeiro\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Rio de Janeiro\">Rio de Janeiro<\/a> and other cities to celebrate Bolsonaro&#8217;s conviction, as reported by <i>The Guardian<\/i>. <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/President_of_Chile\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:President of Chile\">President of Chile<\/a><\/span> <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gabriel_Boric\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Gabriel Boric\">Gabriel Boric<\/a><\/span> and <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/President_of_Colombia\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:President of Colombia\">President of Colombia<\/a><\/span> <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gustavo_Petro\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Gustavo Petro\">Gustavo Petro<\/a><\/span> both welcomed the ruling and highlighted it as a symbolic victory for democracy.\n<\/p>\n<p>US President <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikinews.org\/wiki\/Donald_Trump\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Donald Trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>, who had earlier imposed <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tariffs_in_the_second_Trump_administration#Brazil\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Tariffs in the second Trump administration\">50% export tariffs<\/a> on Brazilian goods because of the case, said the court&#8217;s decision was &#8220;very surprising&#8221;, though he didn&#8217;t confirm whether he would seek new sanctions on Brazil, when inquired by <i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikinews.org\/wiki\/CNN\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"CNN\">CNN<\/a><\/i> reporters on Thursday. In a post on social media, <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Secretary_of_State\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:United States Secretary of State\">Secretary of State<\/a><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikinews.org\/wiki\/Marco_Rubio\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Marco Rubio\">Marco Rubio<\/a> called the case a &#8220;witch hunt&#8221; and said the Trump administration would respond accordingly.\n<\/p>\n<p>In a <i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikinews.org\/wiki\/The_New_York_Times\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"The New York Times\">The New York Times<\/a><\/i> essay published on Sunday, President Lula da Silva defended the court&#8217;s decision as a &#8220;historic decision which safeguards our institutions and the democratic rule of law&#8221;, and dismissed accusations by the US government of a &#8220;witch hunt&#8221;. He also claimed that the Trump administration was weaponising its <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tariffs_in_the_second_Trump_administration\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Tariffs in the second Trump administration\">tariff policies<\/a><\/span> and the <span class=\"interwiki-link-foreign\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Magnitsky_Act\" class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:Magnitsky Act\">Magnitsky Act<\/a><\/span> to grant Bolsonaro impunity. Lula concluded his essay by telling President Trump that Brazil remained open to negotiating &#8220;anything that can bring mutual benefits&#8221;, but warned that &#8220;Brazil&#8217;s democracy and
