Success is packaged as aspiration \u2014 polished, frictionless, inevitable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But according to Dubai-based British entrepreneur and podcaster Matt Haycox, that version of entrepreneurship is deeply misleading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe only ever see the people at the very top of their game,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd then everyone frames the whole thing through that lens. It\u2019s the same with footballers, actors, entrepreneurs \u2014 we look at the elite and forget the reality underneath.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Haycox knows that reality well. Over more than two decades, he has built and scaled companies across finance, hospitality and media, raised hundreds of millions in funding for businesses, gone through bankruptcy twice in public view, and rebuilt again. He\u2019s experienced both the upside people envy \u2014 and the pressure they rarely see.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What concerns him now is how romanticised entrepreneurship has become.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIn a culture where money and possessions are constantly glamorised online, people see the lifestyle before they see the cost,\u201d he says. \u201cThey see escapism. But change the question \u2014 remove the certainty \u2014 and the numbers collapse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf you tell people they might have to work 18 hours a day, seven days a week, with no guarantee they\u2019ll even make two grand a month, suddenly entrepreneurship doesn\u2019t sound so attractive,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That\u2019s why, in his view, true entrepreneurship isn\u2019t for most people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cCould everyone work for themselves in theory? Yes, if they\u2019ve got a skill they can monetise. But real entrepreneurship \u2014 solving problems at scale, taking financial risk, being responsible for staff, outcomes and consequences \u2014 that\u2019s not for 99% of people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most people, he says, want stability. They want predictability. They want to know there\u2019s a pay cheque coming in at the end of the month. There\u2019s nothing wrong with that \u2014 but it\u2019s very different from the reality of building something from nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe failure rate is enormous,\u201d Haycox says. \u201cMost entrepreneurs don\u2019t succeed. Most of them fail. But people only notice the winners.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He compares it to acting. \u201cPeople think of Leonardo DiCaprio. They forget that 99% of actors are out of work, waiting tables. Entrepreneurship is the same. We glamorise the outliers and ignore the rest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>When quitting is the right decision<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Online business culture often pushes a single message: never give up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Haycox thinks that advice is dangerously simplistic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere are times when you absolutely should keep going,\u201d he says. \u201cIf the fundamentals that made you believe in something haven\u2019t changed, then you should probably crack on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But equally, he believes there are moments when walking away is the most rational decision a founder can make.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf the variables have shifted, if your original assumptions are no longer true, or if the numbers simply don\u2019t work anymore, then continuing isn\u2019t resilience \u2014 it\u2019s denial.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There\u2019s also a personal line that matters just as much.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cFrom an emotional point of view, if it\u2019s making you miserable, if it\u2019s making you stressed, if it\u2019s draining the life out of you, you have to ask yourself: at what cost?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He\u2019s wary of internet narratives that frame quitting as weakness. \u201cSuccess doesn\u2019t mean anything if you\u2019re unhappy. And nobody else gets to decide where that line is for you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What being \u2018cut out for it\u2019 really means<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For Haycox, being suited to entrepreneurship has nothing to do with confidence or bravado. It comes down to tolerance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cYou have to be comfortable with risk. Comfortable with discomfort. Comfortable with losing things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That\u2019s not theoretical for him. Over the past few years, he\u2019s lost significant amounts of money and rebuilt yet again \u2014 experiences that would devastate many founders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMost people would be suicidal at the thought,\u201d he says. \u201cBut I\u2019m almost invigorated by it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That response, he says, is the real dividing line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHave I got less money today than I did five years ago? Yes. Two or three years ago? Absolutely. But it doesn\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What matters is perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019ve learned more over that period than at any other point in my life. And that\u2019s what excites me about what comes next.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That mindset \u2014 shaped by repeated highs and lows \u2014 is why people gravitate towards Haycox\u2019s podcast and content. Across hundreds of long-form conversations, the pattern he sees is consistent: the people who last aren\u2019t those who avoid problems, but those who don\u2019t break when they arrive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf you can\u2019t sit where I am today, smiling and excited about the future despite what\u2019s happened, then you\u2019re probably not cut out for it,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The same consistency and lived experience underpinning those conversations has helped shape his broader <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">personal brand<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, built around authenticity rather than aspiration.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Demystifying the job, not glorifying the pain<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Haycox is careful not to frame struggle as something to be chased or celebrated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe point isn\u2019t to glorify pain,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s to be honest about the trade-offs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Entrepreneurship isn\u2019t a shortcut to freedom. It\u2019s a different kind of pressure \u2014 one that rewards people who can think clearly under stress, make decisions without certainty, and keep going when there\u2019s no applause.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cFor the right person, that\u2019s energising,\u201d he says. \u201cFor most people, it\u2019s exhausting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And that\u2019s the truth he thinks more people need to hear \u2014 especially those being sold the dream without the disclaimer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEntrepreneurship isn\u2019t meant to be easy,\u201d Haycox says. \u201cIt\u2019s meant to test you. The question isn\u2019t whether it looks good online.
