So she and her friends set to work to revive <a href=\"https:\/\/yorksu.org\/activities\/view\/northern\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">York\u2019s Northern Society<\/a>, offering events including a northern-themed fancy dress pub crawl that included northern icons Wallace and Gromit and the Gallagher brothers, with Morville dressed as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/2011\/dec\/08\/pendle-witches-water-mummified-cat\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Pendle witch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In spring, the society is holding a \u201cYorkshire Olympics\u201d of events including black pudding throwing. Politically and culturally, it carries many shades. It is not just pit villages, back-to-backs and post-industrial wastelands. It is also a place of wealth, verdant landscapes and architectural beauty. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/language\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Language<\/a>, history and economics vary enormously, even from North to South Yorkshire,\u201d Stripe said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIn an elite university, you might feel under-represented, so if this fosters a sense of community for students who are experiencing isolation, then it\u2019s to be encouraged. I don\u2019t think northerners need a society to do that, though, we are quite capable of finding each other without such formality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">While many of the northern societies in the south seem keen to share their love of Greggs sausage rolls, and the logo of the London School of Economics northern society <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lsesunorthernsociety\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">is a yorkshire pudding<\/a>, the University of Cambridge\u2019s branch has a more serious side.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Alongside a programme of events including punting, sponsored by an international law firm, <a href=\"https:\/\/northernsociety.uk\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Cambridge\u2019s northern society<\/a> states: \u201cWe know that applying to Cambridge can feel daunting \u2013 especially if you have never met anyone who has done it before. [Southerners] always ask if they can come to the society, and I say: \u2018Not really, because it\u2019s not really the point, it\u2019s not the space we want it to be if there\u2019s people from the south there.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But that doesn\u2019t stop southerners trying to sneak in: \u201cThere was one girl, I think she came with her mates, and she was doing a fake scouse accent the whole night. People from that area were there, and one of them clocked it.
