Searchers have found a missing Queensland<\/a> coalmine worker dead a day after he became trapped in a roof collapse.<\/p>\n

The man was inside the Curragh mine in central Queensland when the collapse happened about 3pm on Friday. There were fears he was as deep as 1km underground<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Emergency responders found the dead worker on Saturday night, according to the state\u2019s acting mines minister, Tony Perrett.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne worker was safely recovered yesterday, while specialist teams worked through the night to stabilise the site and access the second individual,\u201d Perrett said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cTragically, that worker could not be saved.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Curragh coalmine is north of Blackwater, about 200km west of Rockhampton.<\/p>\n

The site covers about 256 square kilometres across two separate mines and has been in operation since 1983.<\/p>\n

Curragh has been owned by Coronado Global Resources since 2018.<\/p>\n

Coronado\u2019s chief executive, Douglas Thompson, said the company was deeply saddened by the death and extended its deepest sympathies to the family and colleagues of the worker.<\/p>\n

He said it was providing support to contracted mine operator Mammoth Underground Mine Management, which was working with authorities to determine the cause of the collaspe.<\/p>\n

A Coronado spokesperson said earlier that all underground mining operations had been suspended.<\/p>\n

In a separate incident, about 300km north of Curragh, a gold prospector working at a private mine site died after being hit by falling rocks.<\/p>\n

The 58-year-old man had been working alone with an excavator at a Mount Britton property when a rock face partly collapsed on Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n

He died from injuries to his leg caused by a falling rock, police said on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Perrett said both incidents were \u201ctragic reminders of the risks faced by those who work in our resources sector\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery worker deserves to return home safely, and I expect full and thorough investigations into both incidents to ensure answers are provided and lessons are learned.\u201d<\/p>\n
