The United States has seen the number of influenza cases climb significantly in December, coming after the most severe flu<\/a> season since 2018, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said.<\/p>\n It\u2019s not yet clear whether there will be an increase in the total number of people who get the flu this season \u2013 or whether more people just got it at once in December \u2013 but more than 3,100 people died from the virus in the US in the year ending August 2025, according to the latest data<\/a> from the CDC.<\/p>\n As such, people who have not yet gotten a flu vaccine should still get one, according to Jennifer Nuzzo<\/a>, an epidemiologist at Brown University.<\/p>\n \u201cBottom line for people, if they haven\u2019t gotten vaccinated against the flu, they should get vaccinated, particularly young kids and older adults,\u201d Nuzzo said.<\/p>\n The spike in cases comes after a 2024-2025 flu season that was the most severe since 2018, according to the CDC<\/a>. It also included 279 influenza-associated pediatric deaths, the highest reported to the agency during a seasonal influenza epidemic.<\/p>\n This year, a new variant, subclade K, has emerged and the flu season started earlier than usual in Europe, with \u201chigh or very high influenza activity<\/a>\u201d, in December in the region.<\/p>\n In the United States, there had been an estimated 7.5m influenza cases and 81,000 hospitalizations by 20 December. That marked a 25% increase in cases over the previous week, according to the CDC.<\/p>\n Thirty-two states<\/a> have seen a \u201chigh or very high\u201d number of flu illnesses.<\/p>\n \u201cA lot of people are getting the flu at the same time, which is always tough. That is actually tougher than a situation in which people get it and it\u2019s spread out over a longer period,\u201d Nuzzo said. \u201cIt could be a worse season, in part because more people are going to need more care than hospitals can easily deliver.\u201d<\/p>\n Epidemiologists are also concerned that fewer people could opt to get the flu vaccine because the CDC, led by the health secretary, Robert F Kennedy Jr, canceled its campaign<\/a> encouraging people to get the shot.
