{"id":9010,"date":"2026-01-03T14:58:21","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T14:58:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=9010"},"modified":"2026-01-03T14:58:21","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T14:58:21","slug":"britain-not-involved-in-us-venezuela-attack-says-keir-starmer-venezuela","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=9010","title":{"rendered":"Britain not involved in US Venezuela attack, says Keir Starmer | Venezuela"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Sir Keir Starmer has said the UK was not involved in the US operation in Venezuela, in which the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/03\/explosions-reported-venezuela-caracas\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">president, Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, and his wife were \u201ccaptured\u201d by special forces<\/a> and the capital, Caracas, hit with airstrikes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Speaking for the first time since Donald Trump launched his extraordinary attack, the prime minister said he had not spoken to the US president, and that the UK was keen to establish \u201cthe facts\u201d of what had happened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Starmer said the government was working with the British embassy in Caracas to support the 500 Britons in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/venezuela\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Venezuela<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Speaking to broadcasters, the PM said: \u201cIt\u2019s obviously a fast-moving situation and we need to establish all of the facts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe UK was not involved in any way in this operation, and as you would expect we are focusing on British nationals in Venezuela and working very closely with our embassy, and so we want to talk to the president, I will want to talk to allies, but at the moment we need to establish the facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"0de375f6-f421-4fb0-ae30-baff1ac963bb\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-fd61eq\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">Venezuelan president Nicol\u00e1s Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who have been captured by US forces and flown out of the country.<\/span> Photograph: Rayner Pe\u00f1a R\/EPA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He added that he was waiting for more details to emerge from a press conference to be held by Trump later on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Starmer said: \u201cI always say and believe we should all uphold international law, but I think at this stage, a fast-moving situation, let\u2019s establish the facts and take it from there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The prime minister has been urged to denounce the operation by US forces. The Liberal Democrat leader, Sir Ed Davey, said the action was \u201cillegal\u201d and could embolden other world leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a post on X he said: \u201cKeir Starmer should condemn Trump\u2019s illegal action in Venezuela.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cMaduro is a brutal and illegitimate dictator, but unlawful attacks like this make us all less safe. Trump is giving a green light to the likes of Putin and Xi to attack other countries with impunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Green party leader, Zack Polanski, agreed, posting on the same platform that Starmer and Yvette Cooper, the foreign secretary, should oppose it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Polanski said: \u201cAfter years of arming a genocide and worshipping the \u2018special relationship\u2019, Trump now believes he can act with impunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Polanski later responded to Starmer\u2019s comments and said: \u201cStarmer says he wants to establish facts by watching Donald Trump\u2019s press conference. People said giving [Trump] a second state visit was a genius move of strategy \u2013 really seems to have paid off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cSpecial relationship \u2013 alive and kicking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Reform UK leader, Nigel Farage, called the operation \u201cunorthodox\u201d, and acknowledged it had broken international law. However, he added: \u201cIf [it] makes China and Russia think twice, it may be a good thing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI hope the Venezuelan people can now turn a new leaf without Maduro.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The shadow foreign secretary, Dame Priti Patel, said \u201cnobody will shed tears\u201d that Maduro has been \u201cremoved\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Conservative frontbencher said: \u201cWe have always strongly condemned Maduro\u2019s brutal and repressive regime and the Conservative government did not consider Maduro\u2019s administration as legitimate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cNobody will shed tears for him being removed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe await the full facts about the US operation which has removed Maduro and we want to see the Venezuelan people enjoy democratic norms and freedoms.
