The white metal\u2019s recent advance has been buoyed by speculative inflows and lingering supply dislocations across major trading hubs following a historic short squeeze in October.<\/p>\n<p>The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index, a key gauge of the US currency\u2019s strength, was down 0.7% for the week, its biggest drop since June.<\/p>\n<p>Read:<br \/>Platinum soars to all-time high<br \/>Gold rises toward record as traders watch US data and Venezuela<\/p>\n<div class=\"visible-sm-block visible-xs-block m1010\">\n<div class=\"ad-container-wrapper\">\n<p>ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>CONTINUE READING BELOW<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Gold has gained around 70% this year and silver more than 150%, with both metals on track for their best annual performances since 1979.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The scorching rally has been supported by elevated central-bank purchases, inflows to exchange-traded funds and three successive interest-rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Lower borrowing costs are a tailwind for precious metals, which don\u2019t pay interest, and traders are betting on more rate cuts in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump\u2019s aggressive moves to remake global trade, along with threats to the Fed\u2019s independence, added momentum to the rally earlier this year. Vaults in London have drawn sizable inflows since the October squeeze, though much of the world\u2019s readily available silver remains in New York as traders await the outcome of a US Commerce Department probe into whether imports of critical minerals pose a national security risk. The review could pave the way for tariffs or other trade curbs on the metal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have a lot of trades or positions on paper: now you need to cover those with physical volume \u2014 and there\u2019s not much supply to cover that demand,\u201d said Manav Modi, commodity analyst at Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to power the paper silver with the actual silver,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Partly for the same reason, platinum has been on a tear in recent weeks \u2014 this month alone, it has risen by more than 40%.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The metal traded above $2 400 an ounce for the first time since Bloomberg began compiling data in 1987.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to strong physical demand, global supply of the metal used in the automotive and jewelry sectors is on course for a third annual deficit this year, due largely to disruptions in major producer South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Gold rose 0.7% to $4 510.84 as of 12:15 pm in London. Silver climbed 3.5% to $74.39.
