Silver and platinum also advanced to records.<\/p>\n<p>Spot gold climbed nearly 1%, building on three consecutive days of gains, before pulling back to trade little changed.<\/p>\n<p>Read:<br \/>Platinum soars to all-time high<br \/>Gold rises toward record as traders watch US data and Venezuela<\/p>\n<p>Frictions in\u00a0Venezuela, where the US has blockaded oil tankers, have added to the metal\u2019s haven appeal. Traders are also betting the Federal Reserve will lower borrowing costs further next year, which would be a tailwind for non-yielding precious metals.<\/p>\n<p>Gold has gained nearly 70% this year and silver has risen almost 150%; both are on track for their best annual performance since 1979. It is now positioned to carry these gains into next year.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Goldman Sachs Group Inc is among several banks to predict prices will keep rising in 2026, issuing a base-case scenario of $4 900 an ounce with risks to the upside.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Heavy ETF buying has also been a major driver of the latest surge. Holdings in State Street Corp\u2019s SPDR Gold Trust, the biggest precious-metals ETF, have risen by more than a fifth this year. Traders are also watching developments in Venezuela, where Trump has warned President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro not to challenge the US and vowed to keep oil seized from a supertanker.<\/p>\n<p>Silver \u2014 which traded above $70 an ounce for the first time on Tuesday \u2014 advanced as much as 1.8% to set a record of $72.70. The white metal\u2019s rally has been even more spectacular than gold\u2019s, with its most recent advance buoyed by speculative inflows and lingering supply dislocations across major trading hubs following a historic short squeeze in October.<\/p>\n<p>Read: Gold, silver near record highs as US data support rate-cut bets<\/p>\n<p>London\u2019s vaults have seen significant inflows since then, but much of the world\u2019s available silver remains in New York as traders await the outcome of a US Commerce Department probe on whether critical minerals imports threaten national security, which could lead to tariffs or trade restrictions on the metal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnlike previous silver rallies driven primarily by leverage, this move is being underwritten by real demand for metal, which is changing how the market behaves around key price thresholds,\u201d said Feeney. \u201cI can\u2019t see an end to the trend just yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"visible-sm-block visible-xs-block m1010\">\n<div class=\"ad-container-wrapper\">\n<p>ADVERTISEMENT:<\/p>\n<p>CONTINUE READING BELOW<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Platinum\u00a0also soared on Wednesday, jumping as much as 4% to advance beyond $2 300 an ounce for the first time since Bloomberg began compiling data in 1987.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Buoyed by tight supplies and historically elevated borrowing costs, the metal \u2014 used in the automotive and jewelry sectors \u2014 rose for a 10th straight session, its longest winning streak since 2017.<\/p>\n<p>It has gained about 150% this year, the biggest annual increase, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Silver, currently near 82, has been at elevated levels for around two weeks. Readings above 70 typically signal overbought conditions and that the metal could be poised for a pullback.<\/p>\n<p>Spot gold edged up 0.2% to $4 494.75 an ounce at 12:11 pm in London, having earlier hit a record of $4 525.77. Silver advanced 1% to $72.33. Platinum was up 1.2%, while palladium gave up earlier gains.
