Hundreds of pubs, including at least one in the Chancellor\u2019s constituency, have barred Labour MPs as a campaign against rising costs gathers pace.<\/p>\n
The protest, mainly against increases in business rates, comes as a British Institute of Innkeeping survey found 80% of pubs will cut staff hours, 42% will make staff redundant and 71% will increase food prices.<\/p>\n
Trade body UK Hospitality has warned that business rates for the average pub will increase by 76% after the Chancellor\u2019s changes, which could lead to some closures.<\/p>\n
The SNP has branded the Prime Minister \u201cNo Cheer Keir\u201d thanks to cost increases such as the rise in employers\u2019 National Insurance contributions in the 2024 budget.<\/p>\n
Steve Alton, CEO of\u00a0the British Institute of Innkeeping,\u00a0said: \u201cThe Prime Minister stated that\u00a0\u2018Pubs\u2026are the beating heart of our communities. When our locals do well, our economy does too.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need Government to urgently reverse their decision on taxing our pubs out of existence and deliver meaningful change to the unsustainable levels of tax they already face, before it is too late.\u201d<\/p>\n
SNP MP Chris Law, has demanded the Labour Government reverse the rise to employers\u2019 National Insurance Contributions and support pubs and costumers this festive period.<\/p>\n He said:\u00a0\u201cNo cheer Keir has put a premium on the price of a pint thanks to his disastrous budget.\u201d<\/p>\n Andy Lennox,\u00a0a publican in Dorset and the organiser of the campaign, said if a Labour MP came in for a pint over Christmas, he would demand they \u201cdon\u2019t come in\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve done enough talking\u201d, he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve had letters hand-delivered to the chancellor. We\u2019ve told the chancellor what we need. We need an emergency VAT cut to 13% now.<\/p>\n \u201cUntil that happens, this is going to get bigger and bigger and bigger. The vast majority of everybody I know is either going bust, struggling, or on their last leg.\u201d<\/p>\n Mr Lennox said his pub made revenue of \u00a31.6 million last year but only \u00a350,000 in profit, not including \u00a325,000 worth of repairs he had to make to the premises.<\/p>\n Jeremy Clarkson, who opened the Farmer\u2019s Dog on his Diddly Squat farm, announced he had joined the campaign last week.<\/p>\n He wrote on X: \u201cTo be clear, I have banned all Labour MPs from my pub, except one: Markus Campbell-Savours. He\u2019s welcome any time. And not just because the Labour Party has now sacked him.\u201d<\/p>\n Mr Campbell-Savours, the MP for Penrith & Solway, was suspended from the party after he voted against taxing inherited farmland.<\/p>\n The Treasury insisted it was helping the hospitality trade. \u201cWe\u2019re protecting pubs, restaurants and caf\u00e9s with the budget\u2019s \u00a34.3 billion support package. Without this support, pubs would face a 45% increase in the total bills they pay next year,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n \u201cBecause of the support we\u2019ve put in place, we\u2019ve got that down to just 4%.
