Gutterman initially commented before missing documents were re-released, and said later he believes his statements still stand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><strong>Related:<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/dec\/21\/epstein-files-photos-removed\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">US justice department restores photo featuring Trump from Epstein files<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Journalists, investigators, and generally concerned citizens have a right to records produced and held by public agencies, with few exceptions, and can seek legal redress if they\u2019re not provided within a specific time period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">This slow trickle of Epstein documents, which is in contravention of the law passed mandating that Trump\u2019s DOJ release all Epstein files by 19 December, also raises questions about these papers\u2019 intersection with the traditional public records laws that protect this right to access.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThese documents are a little outside the normal area for traditional public records reporters seek and uncover through freedom of information laws, which are <strong>part of the bedrock of our democracy<\/strong> and an important tool for understanding how government operates,\u201d Gutterman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhen I was a reporter, I frequently used public records laws to get documents for stories, and some agencies were a lot more responsive than others. As skeptical as I was \u2026 <strong>I rarely felt that a records request was being denied for political purposes.
