{"id":5945,"date":"2025-12-22T14:09:21","date_gmt":"2025-12-22T14:09:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=5945"},"modified":"2025-12-22T14:09:21","modified_gmt":"2025-12-22T14:09:21","slug":"a-champion-of-aboriginal-rights-alice-springs-leader-geoffrey-shaw-dies-aged-79-indigenous-australians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=5945","title":{"rendered":"\u2018A champion of Aboriginal rights\u2019: Alice Springs leader Geoffrey Shaw dies aged 79 | Indigenous Australians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">One of Central Australia\u2019s most highly respected Aboriginal leaders and Vietnam war veteran has died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Kaytetye and Arrernte man, Geoffrey Shaw OAM, was born in the dry Todd riverbed in 1945 and began his military career at 18 in 1964, serving until the early 1970s before returning home to devote himself to his community in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/alice-springs\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Alice Springs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He died in Alice Springs on Thursday, aged 79.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Shaw served in the Indonesian-Malaysian confrontation for 18 months as a commander with the 4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. To country, to community and to the nation. His military service shaped his discipline, leadership and strong sense of responsibility, all of which he carried into his work with the CLC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOn behalf of the Central Land Council and the people we represent, I extend our sincere condolences to Mr Shaw\u2019s family and friends. Mr Shaw\u2019s contribution to this organisation, the land rights movement and the wider Central Australian community will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Williams said Shaw was a mentor to many young leaders and inspired future generations to continue the struggle for justice, equality and the recognition of Aboriginal rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">From 1973 to 1975, Shaw attended landmark meetings that followed the royal commission into Aboriginal land rights. That inquiry, chaired by Justice Edward Woodward, was established by the Whitlam government to determine the appropriate way to recognise Aboriginal land rights in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/northern-territory\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Northern Territory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It led to the creation of the CLC, for which Shaw served as a delegate from its inception until 2006.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Shaw was also a former president of the Tangentyere Council, a community-controlled organisation that provides a variety of support services to the 17 town camps around Alice Springs and was the first Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) commissioner for Central Australia.
