{"id":5102,"date":"2025-12-19T10:27:22","date_gmt":"2025-12-19T10:27:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=5102"},"modified":"2025-12-19T10:27:22","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T10:27:22","slug":"gaza-phd-student-and-family-evacuated-to-uk-after-foreign-office-u-turn-gaza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=5102","title":{"rendered":"Gaza PhD student and family evacuated to UK after Foreign Office U-turn | Gaza"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The UK government has finally evacuated Manar al-Houbi, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/gaza\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Gaza<\/a> student who won a fully funded scholarship to pursue her PhD at the University of Glasgow, along with her family from the war-ravaged territory this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In October, the Guardian highlighted Houbi\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2025\/oct\/12\/manar-al-houbi-gaza-phd-student-family-blocked-from-entering-uk\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">desperate battle<\/a> to get her family evacuated after they were denied entry to the UK, despite her scholarship and visa permitting her to bring them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As part of a UK crackdown on immigration, most international students have been prevented from bringing their dependants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Shortly after Houbi\u2019s story, the UK government made a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2025\/oct\/30\/uk-rule-change-allows-palestinian-scholars-to-bring-families-from-gaza-university-students\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">U-turn on its policy<\/a>, stating it would support the evacuation of dependants on a \u201ccase-by-case basis\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Houbi and her family have now reached Jordan and will shortly travel to the UK. They are the only family travelling together from Gaza whose evacuation the British government has facilitated. Most students have had no choice but to leave their families behind, while others have simply refused to take up their places.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Set to expire on 31 December 2025, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/support-for-students-travelling-to-the-uk-from-gaza\/scholarships-for-students-from-gaza\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">UK\u2019s Gaza evacuation scheme<\/a> has been described by students as beset by delays, poor communication and uncertainty. It has left students stuck in Gaza, where conditions have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/dec\/13\/gaza-a-living-hell-after-heavy-winter-rains-drench-makeshift-tents\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">deteriorated<\/a> amid floods, escalating food shortages and disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Some told the Guardian that they felt pressure from the UK government to travel without their children despite the recent policy change stating they could bring them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">When Wahhaj Muhammad, 32, was advised by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/foreign-commonwealth-and-development-office\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office<\/a> (FCDO) to consider evacuating alone, he believed his family would soon follow. Instead, as the autumn term draws to a close, she is certain that she will not make it out of the enclave this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cNone of us know if the UK\u2019s student evacuation scheme will be extended or not,\u201d says Shaher. \u201cWe haven\u2019t been given any clear guidance or timelines and have no idea what 2026 will bring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The 34-year-old mother of three says when presented with the choice of travelling alone, without her children, she felt nauseous. \u201cHow can I even consider leaving my children behind in Gaza?\u201d she asks. \u201cNowhere else in the world would a mother be expected to part so easily from her children. It\u2019s dehumanising. But for the past six months, he has been locked in a bureaucratic limbo with British authorities, which he described being \u201calmost as traumatic as the war itself\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">His five-year-old son is severely autistic and non-verbal, and has been without access to treatment for two years. Yet the FCDO has suggested Aldalou take the opportunity to leave while he can \u2013 but he refuses. \u201cThey should ask themselves what they would do if they were in my shoes,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Without the guarantee of evacuating together as a family, Aldalou insists there will be no leaving Gaza. \u201cIt\u2019s heartbreaking that, after everything we\u2019ve been through, we\u2019re being asked to make this impossible decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Last week, during a closed meeting between the department for education and universities, there was discussion of whether students still stuck in Gaza could begin studies online and if the evacuation scheme could be extended to allow later arrival.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However, sources told the Guardian it was unlikely that the FCDO would extend the scheme without Home Office approval.
