In April, the company announced it was spending $18bn on the Louisiana LNG project, one which climate advocates warn \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/apr\/29\/woodside-commits-18bn-to-us-project-that-climate-advocates-warn-would-export-harmful-gas-until-the-2070s-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">would export harmful gas until the 2070s<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"><sub class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/sub><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">During her time in the top job at Australia\u2019s largest ASX-listed oil and gas producer, O\u2019Neill shrugged off criticism from climate activists and shareholders \u2013 including those who protested at successive annual general meetings about Woodside\u2019s fossil fuel projects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">O\u2019Neill has criticised young people who are ideologically opposed to fossil fuels, suggesting it was hypocritical for them to order cheap online consumer goods \u201cwithout any sort of recognition of the energy and carbon impact of their actions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">At the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/may\/27\/woodside-boss-meg-oneill-young-people-fossil-fuels-temu-comments\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">gas industry\u2019s annual conference<\/a> in May, O\u2019Neill said: \u201cIt\u2019s been a fascinating journey to watch the discussion, particularly amongst young people who have this very ideological, almost zealous view of, you know, fossil fuels bad, renewables good, that are happily plugging in their devices, ordering things from [online fast-fashion stores] <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/shein\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Shein<\/a> and Temu \u2013 having, you know, one little thing shipped to their house without any sort of recognition of the energy and carbon impact of their actions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cSo that human impact and the consumer\u2019s role in driving energy demand and emissions absolutely is a missing space in the conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In February, a group of climate activists were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/feb\/10\/climate-activists-fined-over-protest-outside-woodside-boss-meg-oneills-perth-home-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">fined over a foiled protest<\/a> at O\u2019Neill\u2019s family home in Perth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">During O\u2019Neill\u2019s final months as CEO, Woodside was successful in lobbying the Albanese government to extend its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/sep\/12\/north-west-shelf-gas-project-extended-to-2070-with-partial-protection-for-indigenous-rock-art\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">controversial North West Shelf<\/a> gas project for an additional 40 years, until 2070.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"cbbc84d4-ff18-4744-b028-b4c78dd361c2\" appoint O\u2019Neill as its chief executive officer from 1 April next year, after the exit of Murray Auchincloss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In February, the British oil and gas giant signalled a major strategy shift away from green ambitions in favour of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/feb\/26\/bp-oil-and-gas-spending-green-energy-scale-back\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">ramping up fossil fuel production<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">BP announced it would increase its investment in oil and gas to US$10bn (\u00a37.9bn) a year while slashing more than US$5bn from its previous green investment plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">At the time, Auchincloss said that optimism for a fast green energy transition had been \u201cmisplaced\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Woodside has appointed Liz Westcott as acting CEO, effective from Thursday.
