Since 1991, US health officials have recommended universal vaccination for infants against hepatitis B, with the first of three shots administered right after birth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Experts have voiced concern around the policy change, which the CDC describes as \u201cindividual-based decision making\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis is going to lead to an increase in preventable infections among children,\u201d Michaela Jackson, program director of prevention policy at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/hepatitis-b\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Hepatitis B<\/a> Foundation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/dec\/05\/cdc-panel-rfk-hepatitis-b-vaccine\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">told the Guardian<\/a> after the vaccine advisers\u2019 vote earlier this month. She anticipates that \u201cparents are not going to know who to trust any longer\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Jackson also said that the policy change is \u201cremoving choice by causing barriers to access.\u201d The agency\u2019s recommendations affect US health insurance coverage and play a key role in assisting physicians who are choosing appropriate vaccines for patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Hepatitis B can lead to serious liver disease and is primarily spread through blood, semen, or certain other body fluids, and can also be spread by close contact with people who do not know they are infected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Hepatitis B infections <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/surv-manual\/php\/table-of-contents\/chapter-4-hepatitis-b.html#:~:text=Hepatitis%20B%20vaccination%20is%20the,infection%20and%20risk%20of%20transmission.https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/surv-manual\/php\/table-of-contents\/chapter-4-hepatitis-b.html#:~:text=Hepatitis%20B%20vaccination%20is%20the,infection%20and%20risk%20of%20transmission\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">have fallen nearly 90%<\/a> in the US from 9.6 per 100,000 individuals before vaccination became widespread in 1982 to about one per 100,000 in 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Experts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reutersconnect.com\/all?search=all%3AL6N3XB106&amp;linkedFromStory=true\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">warn<\/a> the new recommendation, which the CDC described as individual-based decision-making, could expose more children to the harmful virus and could lead to more families opting out of vaccination in the absence of a firm federal policy in place. Kennedy is a longtime anti-vaccine activist who has made far-reaching changes to the US vaccination policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Dr Emily Landon, an infectious diseases expert at the University of Chicago Medicine, said the CDC\u2019s advisory panel\u2019s job is to help clinicians interpret piles of science and help them make good decisions on how to care for their patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis recommendation is ignoring the science.
