{"id":3794,"date":"2025-12-15T11:47:35","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T11:47:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=3794"},"modified":"2025-12-15T11:47:35","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T11:47:35","slug":"ofcom-investigates-bt-and-three-for-failing-to-connect-999-calls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=3794","title":{"rendered":"Ofcom investigates BT and Three for failing to connect 999 calls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Ofcom is investigating BT and Three over mobile outages it said had caused &#8220;UK-wide disruption&#8221;, including to emergency services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Thousands of Three customers <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cdxlqeyw95no\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"noopener\">reported they were unable to make calls in June<\/a>, while BT and EE customers were <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cnvmvqrnq7go\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"noopener\">hit by a similar outage in July<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The regulator said it would examine whether the mobile networks did not do enough to prevent the problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Three has not yet responded to a request for comment &#8211; but a BT Group spokesperson apologised to customers who had been affected.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;We will co-operate fully with Ofcom throughout the investigation and apologise again for any issues caused by this incident,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">According to Ofcom, firms must take proper action to identify risks and prepare for &#8220;anything that compromises the availability, performance or functionality of their network or service&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">It said providers must also prevent &#8220;adverse effects arising from any such compromises&#8221; &#8211; saying where this happens, they must take steps to mitigate them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The incidents at the heart of its investigation saw thousands across BT and Three networks report problems with their mobile service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">At the time, Three told customers complaining of issues making and receiving calls on 25 June it was experiencing &#8220;an issue affecting voice services&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">This was not isolated to its own network &#8211; it also caused problems for customers on networks that piggyback off of Three, such as ID Mobile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">A month later, EE and BT customers complained of similar issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">A government spokesperson said at the time &#8220;communications providers have statutory obligations to ensure their networks and services are appropriately resilient&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Operators have previously faced scrutiny over outages or issues affecting peoples&#8217; ability to make calls or contact emergency services. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">BT was <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cjr4zkq1kkwo\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"noopener\">fined \u00a317.5m in July 2024<\/a> for a &#8220;catastrophic failure&#8221; of its emergency call handling service which led to thousands of 999 calls not being connected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Three was <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-40300361\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"noopener\">ordered to pay \u00a31.9m in 2017<\/a> after Ofcom found it could have prevented an issue that caused a loss of service for customers a year prior.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">It has since merged with Vodafone to form the UK&#8217;s biggest mobile network, with 27 million customers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>#Ofcom #investigates #failing #connect #calls<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ofcom is investigating BT and &hellip;
