They said he would have done anything to protect anyone.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen he did what he did, he wasn\u2019t thinking about the background of the people he\u2019s saving, the people dying in the street,\u201d his father said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe doesn\u2019t discriminate between one nationality and another. Especially here in Australia, there\u2019s no difference between one citizen and another.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2018He really is a superhero\u2019<\/h2>\n
Lubaba Alhmidi AlKahil, the media director for the Australians for Syria Association, visited al-Ahmed on Monday afternoon to deliver a tray of food and a bouquet of flowers. She said he had undergone successful surgery and was recovering, but was still in pain.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat he did, he really is a superhero,\u201d she said. AlKahil hadn\u2019t met al-Ahmed prior to the tragedy but said the community was \u201cvery proud\u201d of him.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou might not believe it, but while we were watching the news, a lot of us had the feeling that he looks Syrian, he looks really Syrian,\u201d she said. \u201cThen we found, he is Syrian.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said al-Ahmed came from a \u201clovely family\u201d that was surrounding him with care and prayers.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is not strange for a Syrian individual, the community is lovely, supportive, with strong bonds. We\u2019ve refused injustice and persecution [in Syria] and it\u2019s not strange that one of us had the feeling: \u2018No, I will not watch, I will die to help.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
For AlKahil, the profound tragedy also brought a sense of fear.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs Muslims, every time there\u2019s an attack we say to ourselves, oh no, people will say it\u2019s Muslims that are bad,\u201d she said. \u201cWe are scared to leave our houses if we\u2019ll be accused.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut our religion is a religion of peace and we are very peaceful people. This proves that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
