Charlie Kirk will<\/span> live forever \u2014 at least online.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the year since he was gunned down at an event at Utah Valley University, the Turning Point USA founder has gone from a man cut down in his prime to a recurring internet meme, complete with an AI-generated song, \u201cWe Are Charlie Kirk,\u201d which hit No. 1<\/a> on Spotify\u2019s Viral 50 U.S. ranking. Audio of his killing became a TikTok sound for girlie outfit transformation<\/a> videos; he\u2019s been inserted into movies like \u201cAvatar<\/a>\u201d and \u201cThe Odyssey<\/a>\u201d; he\u2019s been AI\u2019d into Studio Ghibli-style<\/a> art, the final scene of \u201cThe Sopranos<\/a>,\u201d and the video game \u201cGrand Theft Auto<\/a>.\u201d Even the moment of his death<\/a> has gotten the meme treatment, with parodies depicting him with Jeffrey Epstein<\/a> and Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The ridicule comes as a product of the American right\u2019s insistence<\/a> that Kirk\u2019s violent death be taken seriously. They fought back hard against the meme-making and serious critique alike, weaponizing the conservative college-whisperer\u2019s death to broadly crack down on free speech<\/a>. <\/p>\n

President Trump and his allies almost immediately blamed<\/a> Democrats and \u201cthe radical left<\/a>,\u201d without evidence, for Kirk\u2019s assassination. At the Department of Defense, Secretary Pete Hegseth promised to investigate<\/a> whether members of the armed forces were inadequately mournful and terminate them. The State Department revoked visas<\/a> of noncitizens who \u201ccelebrated\u201d Kirk\u2019s death. Local cops got in on the civil rights-bashing fun, too: A Tennessee man was arrested for posting a meme in the wake of Kirk\u2019s death<\/a>, amid a wave of firings in the state on similarly unstable grounds. <\/p>\n

No sector of society was untouched by the rising tides of brain-dead McCarthyism<\/a>: Dozens of educators were terminated for having their say about the killing; an MSNBC political analyst<\/a> as well as a Washington Post columnist were fired (an arbitrator has since ordered<\/a> the latter be rehired); workers at Office Depot, the major airlines<\/a>, and a prominent law firm<\/a> were axed; ABC suspended<\/a> Jimmy Kimmel for his on-air remarks.<\/p>\n

Kirk\u2019s legacy has also been consecrated in the public square. An artist plans<\/a> to unveil a busted statue of the TPUSA founder in New York City\u2019s Times Square on the anniversary of his death. His legacy of ire for basically any oppressed group you can name has been enshrined by changing the names of roads to \u201cCharlie Kirk Memorial Highway\u201d in Naples, Florida<\/a>, and outside Nashville \u2014 displacing Vietnam Veterans Boulevard<\/a> \u2014 and \u201cCharlie Kirk Way\u201d in the red part<\/a> of California. As I was writing this, a pickup truck with a sticker that reads \u201cIn Loving Memory of Charlie Kirk\u201d passed me on the highway outside Chappaqua, New York.<\/p>\n
