An industry-led training facility will open next month to support the growth of sectors such as renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, construction and infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Training and consultancy firm Vertical Motives Consultancy is behind the VMCL Skills Academy at MSIP Dundee, the site of the former Michelin tyre factory.<\/p>\n
School-leavers, unemployed adults, career-changers, employees advancing their skills, and international learners will be offered training in critically-needed skills, from welding technologies to robotic automation.\u00a0It will train an initial 100 people, rising to 450 in 2030.<\/p>\n
The academy has been more than four years in the planning for Vertical Motives managing director Peter Waggott and a team of specialists in technology, operations, working with the Scottish and UK governments, Business Development and schools outreach.<\/p>\n
It has gained the support of industry partners Rolls-Royce, WB Alloys, Malin Group, OPITO and SAFER Training as well as Scottish Engineering, ECITB and OPITO.<\/p>\n
All involved see the need to address the critical skills gaps in Scotland\u2019s energy transition, advanced manufacturing ambitions and future digital economy. Scotland needs 11,368 (58%) more engineers by next year across 31 core roles as well as more electricians. The UK as a whole needs 35,000 more welders by next year.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Speaking about the academy\u2019s launch, Mr Waggott, who will act as project lead, said: \u201cBy working closely with employers and education partners, we are creating a sustainable pipeline of talent that addresses critical skills shortages while opening up new opportunities for individuals and communities across Scotland.\u00a0<\/p>\n
