Wordsmith AI, the Edinburgh-based legal AI startup, has raised a further $14 million, led by new investment from Intact Private Capital, alongside existing investors Highland Europe and Index Ventures. FT Ventures has also become a shareholder.<\/p>\n
The company closed its Series B round in June at $70m and the additional investment follows a period of rapid growth, with revenue up by 14 times year-on-year and the platform used by more than 500 companies, including BT, the FT, Sage, Starling and Canva.<\/p>\n
The new money should help deepen Wordsmith\u2019s presence in North America, where demand from enterprise legal teams is accelerating, as well as strengthening its footprint in the financial services sector.<\/p>\n
Wordsmith AI, now also headquartered in New York, builds AI agents that sit within a company\u2019s legal team, receiving requests, routing them with context, resolving routine work against approved playbooks, and escalating only what requires a human lawyer\u2019s judgment, with every step logged for compliance.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery dollar that leaves a legal team and goes to outside counsel is a decision,\u201d said Ross McNairn, co-founder and chief executive of Wordsmith. \u201cToo often, those decisions are made by default rather than by design, because legal teams have never had the infrastructure to handle the work internally.<\/p>\n
\u201cWordsmith gives them that infrastructure \u2013 requests come in, AI agents complete the routine work, lawyers approve what requires judgment, and every step is recorded.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe result is a legal function that keeps more work in-house, spends less on external counsel, and can finally show the business the impact it delivers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Legora, the Stockholm-based platform regarded as Wordsmith\u2019s most direct European rival, has raised $600 million at a $5.6 billion valuation. <\/p>\n
Both companies build primarily for individual lawyers and law firms rather than the in-house workflow layer Wordsmith occupies, but the valuation gap between Wordsmith and its nearest comparables has widened sharply since June, not narrowed.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The global legal AI software market is valued at $5.21bn and is projected to reach $40.94bn by 2034, at a 29.4% compound annual growth rate, according to Fortune Business Insights.<\/p>\n
