{"id":32346,"date":"2026-07-29T16:00:38","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T16:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=32346"},"modified":"2026-07-29T16:00:38","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T16:00:38","slug":"donald-trump-and-wars-of-choice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=32346","title":{"rendered":"Donald Trump and Wars of Choice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"wp-block-intercept-editors-note\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-intercept-editors-note__content\">\n<p><span class=\"has-underline\">President Donald Trump<\/span> reclaimed the White House last year promising to keep the United States out of conflicts and\u00a0claiming\u00a0to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/responsiblestatecraft.org\/trump-inauguration-speech-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">peacemaker<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cUnder Trump, we will have no more wars,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/factbase\/trump\/transcript\/donald-trump-speech-political-rally-wilkes-barre-pennsylvania-august-17-2024\/\">he said<\/a>\u00a0on the campaign trail in 2024.\u00a0And Trump has been especially critical of going to war in Iraq. \u201cWe should have never been in Iraq,\u201d said Trump during a Republican presidential debate in February <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2018\/11\/21\/thanksgiving-donald-trump-lies-honest-president\/\">2016<\/a>. \u201cWe have destabilized the Middle East.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite all of this, the U.S. was joined by Saudi Arabia in attacks on Iranian-backed militias in Iraq on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/us-saudis-attack-iran-backed-groups-iraq-threatening-intensify-conflict-2026-07-29\/\">Wednesday<\/a>. \u201cU.S. and Saudi fighter aircraft struck multiple terrorist logistics and weapons sites across eastern Iraq in a strong response to over 30 IRGC-directed aerial drone attacks in the last 72 hours,\u201d U.S. Central Command announced, referring to Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2026\/07\/28\/iran-missiles-drones-us-air-defenses\/\">recent<\/a> flare-up in Trump\u2019s failing war with Iraq\u2019s neighbor, Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s latest war in the Middle East follows denials last month that he ever campaigned on avoiding forever wars. \u201cI didn\u2019t promise anything,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/08\/politics\/fact-check-trump-new-wars\">told<\/a> \u201cMeet the Press\u201d on NBC News. On that \u2014 if nothing else ever \u2014 Trump has been true to his word. An Intercept <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2026\/03\/30\/trump-secret-wars\/\">analysis<\/a> found, in fact, that America has been embroiled in more than 20 military interventions, armed conflicts, and wars during Trump\u2019s years in the White House.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Today, TomDispatch\u2019s recently retired founding editor, Tom Engelhardt, and I examine the presidential penchant for ruinous wars in the Middle East, why the current narcissist-in-chief couldn\u2019t resist entangling the U.S. in a seemingly endless conflict with Iran, and whether the American people are finally fed up with forever wars.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 <em>Nick Turse, editor of TomDispatch<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!-- BLOCK(tipline)[0](%7B%22componentName%22%3A%22TIPLINE%22%2C%22entityType%22%3A%22SHORTCODE%22%2C%22optional%22%3Atrue%7D)(%7B%7D) --><!-- CONTENT(tipline)[0] --><\/p>\n<p class=\"tipline-shortcode\">If you haven\u2019t yet, <a href=\"https:\/\/join.theintercept.com\/signup\/tom_dispatch_signup\/\">sign up to receive TomDispatch in your inbox here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!-- END-CONTENT(tipline)[0] --><!-- END-BLOCK(tipline)[0] -->\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-me-me-me-presidency\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Me, Me, Me Presidency<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s no I in war. But there is in Iran. And in Iraq, too. Both these wars were about ME \u2014 that is, the Middle East. It\u2019s a region rife with supposed American security interests, but this wordplay points to another very all-too-real dynamic: These wars are as much about the \u201cI\u201d and \u201cME\u201d of the White House as they are about the countries we attack. Or to put it another way: It\u2019s the presidential psyche, stupid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Way back in 2002, then-President George W. Bush warned that Iraq, Iran, and outlier North Korea comprised a grave threat. \u201cStates like these, and their terrorist allies, constitute an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2019\/01\/29\/bush-axis-of-evil-2002-1127725\">axis of evil<\/a>, arming to threaten the peace of the world,\u201d he warned. \u201cBy seeking weapons of mass destruction, these regimes pose a grave and growing danger.\u201d North Korea built a nuclear arsenal, and with it, purchased a <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2022\/02\/27\/ukraine-nuclear-weapons-russia-invasion\/\">guarantee of security<\/a>. The other two countries produced no nukes, and the story has been radically different.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. invaded Iraq in March 2003. Two months later, the war was won. Except it wasn\u2019t. Despite President George W. Bush\u2019s unforgettable May 1, 2003, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mission_Accomplished_speech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mission accomplished<\/a>\u201d moment when, from the deck of an aircraft carrier off the coast of San Diego, he declared \u201cmajor combat operations in Iraq \u2026 ended,\u201d the American war there somehow never actually stopped.\u00a0An insurgency was raging, U.S. bases were being mortared, and American officials feared a civil war between the country\u2019s formerly reigning Sunni minority and its rising Shiite majority was brewing. It became a <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/collections\/the-911-wars\/\">forever war that lived up to the moniker<\/a>. Last week, almost a quarter century since Bush made the case for war in Iraq, a U.S. soldier was killed in an Iranian <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2026\/07\/21\/iran-war-pentagon-casualties-injuries\/\">attack<\/a> on an American base there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Donald Trump was elected on a promise to say goodbye to all that. American-style wars of choice were going to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/06\/07\/trump-says-never-promised-no-new-wars-00952870\">thing of the past<\/a>: \u201cI will not send you to fight and die in stupid foreign wars that never end.\u201d And yet Trump\u2019s America is now deeply involved in a seemingly ever-escalating and never-ending conflict with \u2014 yes! \u2014 Iraq\u2019s neighbor, Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one, I suspect, not even Trump, has the faintest idea why he did this, though maybe he felt left out of the club of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/21\/opinion\/trump-netanyahu-putin-war.html\">forever-war makers<\/a>, co-chaired by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2024\/10\/03\/netanyahu-putin-israel-russia-trump-election\/\">Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a>. Maybe he just sensed that he had to give this country a shot at being globally competitive when it came to making endless (and endlessly unsuccessful) war, if the U.S. was to remain <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2017\/09\/24\/decline-american-empire-donald-trump\/\"><em>the<\/em> superpower<\/a> on this planet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not everyone thinks, however, that you need to fight ruinous wars to be a superpower. There\u2019s China, which is the quietest rising power in recent history because \u2014 except for a few <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2020%E2%80%932021_China%E2%80%93India_skirmishes\">border flare-ups<\/a> with India early in this decade, and <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2023\/02\/03\/china-americas-frontier-fund\/\">saber-rattling<\/a> when it comes to Taiwan, <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2021\/11\/05\/taiwan-china-biden-nuclear-weapons\/\">the island nation<\/a> off the coast of the mainland \u2014 it hasn\u2019t been at war <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sino-Vietnamese_War\">since 1979<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In lieu of pursuing fruitless conflicts around the world, it\u2019s been silently leading the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canarymedia.com\/articles\/clean-energy-manufacturing\/china-exports-cleantech\">global production<\/a> of green energy technology. China\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/AvHgE#selection-1947.0-1959.191\">exports of green tech<\/a> shot up by more than a third in the first six months of the year. This included a reported rise in shipments of lithium batteries and wind turbines by 38 percent and 36 percent, respectively. \u201cIn the first half of this year, the situation in the Middle East was tense and global supply of chemical products was tight,\u201d Wang Jun, deputy director of China\u2019s\u00a0General Administration of Customs said at a recent press briefing. \u201cChina, with its complete industrial system and full-chain supporting capabilities, quickly seized the sudden external demands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this Chinese green technology boom was in full swing even before Iran\u2019s Houthi allies in Yemen declared a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/20\/iran-houthi-yemen-saudi-arabia.html\">maritime embargo<\/a> against Saudi Arabia\u00a0and began <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/yemen-saudi-houthis-attack-shipping-red-sea-iran-6ee98d611669dc84953d2f2e15958bf9\">attacking the kingdom\u2019s oil ships<\/a> in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, briefly driving the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/24\/business\/oil-prices-global-stocks-shipping.html\">price of oil<\/a> back above $100 per barrel, about 40 percent higher than before the conflict began.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"promote-banner\">\n    <a class=\"promote-banner__link\" href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/tomdispatch\"><br \/><span class=\"promote-banner__image\"><br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/TomDispatch_logo-promo-banner.jpg?fit=300%2C150\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/TomDispatch_logo-promo-banner.jpg?w=500 500w, https:\/\/theintercept.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/TomDispatch_logo-promo-banner.jpg?w=300 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"\/>        <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"promote-banner__text\">\n<p class=\"promote-banner__eyebrow\">\n            Read Our Complete Coverage          <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><br \/><\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As his war with Iran has gone off the rails, Trump has begun redefining the conflict from a war to \u201ca little excursion,\u201d which just kept going on and on, leading him in March to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2026\/03\/09\/trump-calls-war-in-iran-a-little-excursion\/\">sum things up<\/a> this way: \u201cWe\u2019ve already won in many ways, but we haven\u2019t won enough. We go forward more determined than ever to achieve ultimate victory that will end this long running danger once and for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll recall that Trump also said on March 2 that the war was set to last \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/factbase\/trump\/transcript\/donald-trump-remarks-medal-of-honor-ceremony-march-2-2026\/#6\">four to five weeks<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0And three days later, that the U.S. and Israel continued \u201cto totally demolish the enemy <a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/factbase\/trump\/transcript\/donald-trump-remarks-major-league-soccer-miami-march-5-2026\/#6\">far ahead of schedule<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0By March 9, Trump said that the conflict was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7383292\/trump-iran-war-end\/\">very complete, pretty much<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0And two days later, the president declared victory. \u201cLet me tell you, we\u2019ve won. You know, you never like to say too early you won,\u201d Trump announced at a rally in Kentucky. \u201cWe won.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like Bush\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/tomdispatch.com\/mission-unaccomplished\/\">mission accomplished<\/a>\u201d moment, Trump\u2019s was also decidedly short-lived. On March 15, the president <a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/factbase\/trump\/transcript\/donald-trump-press-gaggle-air-force-one-march-15-2026\/#99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0Iran still had \u201ca little bit of fight back, but not much.\u201d\u00a0In a Truth Social post five days later, he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116263563453969628\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>:\u00a0\u201cWe are getting very close to meeting our objectives as we consider winding down\u201d the war. On April 1, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/api.politifact.com\/article\/2026\/mar\/30\/Trump-Hegseth-Iran-war-timeline\/\">announced<\/a> the U.S. was \u201con track to complete all of America\u2019s military objectives shortly\u201d and on the 6th said the war \u201ccould end very quickly.\u201d But it didn\u2019t. \u201cThe war in Iran is going along swimmingly,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/factbase\/trump\/transcript\/donald-trump-remarks-taxes-tips-roundtable-las-vegas-april-16-2026\/#31\">declared<\/a> on April 16.\u00a0And in a\u00a0May 1 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/trump-says-deadline-for-congress-to-approve-iran-war-doesnt-apply-claiming-hostilities-have-terminated\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter to Congress<\/a>, Trump said: \u201cThe hostilities that began on February 28, 2026, have terminated.\u201d Except Iran never got the memo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the war has simply gone on and on, Trump has continued to tweak his terminology and rebrand the conflict with Iran as \u201ca skirmish.\u201d (Tell that, of course, to all the <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2026\/03\/11\/iran-school-missile-investigation\/\">dead Iranian children<\/a>!)\u00a0Here\u2019s how he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/daily-on-defense\/4660242\/war-expands-trump-insists-us-winning-skirmish-iran\/\">put it<\/a>, in fact, on July 22: \u201cI call it a skirmish. This is, with this skirmish we have with the Islamic Republic of Iran, and I call it that, because, let me tell you, they\u2019re getting hit so hard and they want to make a deal. But I say they\u2019re not ready to make a deal.\u201d And if the Iran war doesn\u2019t end in the coming weeks, Trump will undoubtedly have to tweak terminology further, perhaps relabeling his skirmish with Iran a tussle, a scuffle, or even a full-scale kerfuffle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Trump insists the war is a minor engagement, he continues to dish out immense amounts of pain on Iranians and threatens even worse. He seems increasingly eager to <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2026\/04\/07\/trump-iran-civilian-power-plants-bridges\/\">blast civilian infrastructure<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2026\/07\/20\/hegseth-civilian-harm-deaths-war\/\">smash Iran<\/a> into submission. As he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/trump-escalates-threats-vows-to-target-iranian-bridges-and-power-plants\">put it<\/a> all too bluntly when it came to those civilian targets: \u201cAny time the Islamic Republic of Iran shoots at a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, whether it be by missile, rocket, drone, or any other device or weapon, the United States will bomb and destroy one bridge or power plant.\u201d And he\u2019s also been threatening to launch \u201ca massive attack. Only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/07\/16\/trump-approval-stuck-30s-post-ipsos-poll-shows\/\">29 percent<\/a> of Americans approve of the way Trump is handling the Iran war, according to a recent Washington Post poll. Even a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/fox-news-poll-voters-oppose-iran-war-see-prolonged-commitment\">Fox News survey\u00a0<\/a>(yes, Fox News!) found disapproval ratings hit a record high in July, with 56 percent of Americans opposing U.S. military action against Iran, including 40 percent who \u201cstrongly\u201d oppose it.\u00a0Nearly two-thirds of respondents now think the conflict will last at least a year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even worse was a recent CBS News\/YouGov poll that found 21 percent of Americans think the conflict will last <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/iran-conflict-trump-opinion-poll\/\">multiple years<\/a>! That same poll found that 67 percent of respondents say the U.S. should end the war with Iran now. Young people are the most fed up, with 83 percent urging the president to stop the war posthaste. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And even among his most fervent followers, support had already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/22\/poll-maga-souring-iran-war-costs-trump-01006976\">dropped<\/a> by 13 percent over the previous two months, according to a Politico poll, while almost 1 of every 5 MAGA voters had come to believe that the U.S. should end its war in Iran, no matter the cost or results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, Trump doesn\u2019t really care about young voters or Republican voters or even MAGA devotees. As he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/22\/us\/politics\/trump-dignified-transfer-soldiers-iran-war.html\">put it<\/a> last week: \u201cA poll just came out: Americans don\u2019t want high gasoline prices, but they\u2019re not against the war.\u201d His war in the ME is wrapped up in his egocentric narcissism and his me, me, me world. The phrase \u201cwars of choice\u201d now means wars of Donald\u2019s choice. But the Iranian government has a say in the matter and has made a <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2026\/04\/08\/ceasefire-iran-war-israel-us\/\">choice to hold out<\/a> amid renewed threats and attacks.
