A Scottish steel firm is playing a vital role in reconnecting Ukraine\u2019s bomb-damaged transport infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Coatbridge-based\u00a0Cairnhill\u00a0Structures\u00a0has\u00a0been providing steel for replacing bridges around Kyiv, which were destroyed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in February 2022 to halt the advance of Russian troops.<\/p>\n
Whilst attending\u00a0the Ukraine\u00a0Recovery Conference in Poland,\u00a0the Foreign Secretary Yvonne Cooper praised the role that\u00a0Scottish\u00a0steel is playing in\u00a0supporting Ukraine\u2019s reconstruction with backing from the\u00a0government\u2019s\u00a0export credit agency,\u00a0UK Export\u00a0Finance\u00a0(UKEF).<\/p>\n
Four bridges have been rebuilt since 2024, with two more due to be completed later this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Ms Cooper, who announced a new package worth almost \u00a3290 million to bolster Ukraine\u2019s recovery and energy security, said:\u00a0\u201cThe UK stands firmly with Ukraine, not only in its fight for freedom today, but in ensuring it has the strength to rebuild for the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cA just and lasting peace is urgent and non-negotiable. But Ukraine needs long-term support both to get through the conflict and to rebuild in future and\u00a0I\u2019m proud that\u00a0Scottish\u00a0steel\u00a0is\u00a0playing a vital role in Ukraine\u2019s recovery, rebuilding\u00a0essential infrastructure, reconnecting\u00a0communities around Kyiv,\u00a0and\u00a0delivering long-term benefits for both our\u00a0economies.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The UK government helped position British businesses as preferred suppliers by hosting events in London, Istanbul,\u00a0Warsaw\u00a0and Kyiv, where contractors were introduced to\u00a0Cairnhill\u00a0Structures.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The project is a key initiative of the UK-Ukraine Infrastructure Taskforce and has contributed to increased employment and apprenticeship opportunities at the company.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Steven Hendry, group managing director at\u00a0Cairnhill, said:\u00a0\u201cCairnhill\u00a0Structures and our staff were very pleased to successfully deliver this UK-government supported project fabricating steelwork for the reconstruction of bridges in Ukraine and making a small contribution to the Ukrainian people in this incredibly difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n
