{"id":31333,"date":"2026-06-16T06:27:38","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T06:27:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=31333"},"modified":"2026-06-16T06:27:38","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T06:27:38","slug":"ureaka-spin-out-uses-waste-to-cut-carbon-in-cement-daily-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=31333","title":{"rendered":"Ureaka spin-out uses waste to cut carbon in cement \u2013 Daily Business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/River-Gowans-Philip-Salter-and-Parvez-Pate.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-196451 lazyload\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"794\" height=\"528\" src=\"https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/River-Gowans-Philip-Salter-and-Parvez-Pate.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-196451 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/River-Gowans-Philip-Salter-and-Parvez-Pate.png 794w, https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/River-Gowans-Philip-Salter-and-Parvez-Pate-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/River-Gowans-Philip-Salter-and-Parvez-Pate-768x511.png 768w, https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/River-Gowans-Philip-Salter-and-Parvez-Pate-600x399.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 794px) 100vw, 794px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Researchers River Gowans, Philip Salter, and Parvez Patel<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">A Strathclyde university spin-out is developing a process that turns construction waste into a low-carbon alternative to cement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Concrete production and cement account for about 8% of global CO2 emissions and the new process is now moving from the lab into commercial application.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Philip Salter, founder and chief executive of Ureaka, is creating \u201csupplementary cementitious materials\u201d (SCMs) from these waste streams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">These materials are designed to be used alongside traditional cement in concrete, reducing the amount of cement needed without requiring changes to existing manufacturing processes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The project is supported by the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC) Spin Out Fund and  is undergoing tests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Ureaka is now seeking additional grant funding and preparing for a seed investment round to support team growth and further development. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">It is also planning third-party testing of its material in a live manufacturing environment \u2013 a significant step towards market readiness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Salter, said: \u201cCement is one of the hardest industries to decarbonise because, even if you electrify production, a large share of emissions still comes from the chemical reactions involved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA key priority for us has been ensuring the process can plug into existing manufacturing systems. The supplementary cementitious material we\u2019re developing is designed to work with current concrete production methods, so manufacturers don\u2019t need to change how they operate, but can still reduce the carbon footprint of their products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Caroline Kewney, senior impact manager at IBioIC, added:\u00a0\u201cConstruction materials are a significant contributor to global emissions, so there is a clear need for scalable alternatives that can support decarbonisation across the sector. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis project demonstrates how industrial biotechnology can turn waste streams into valuable new materials, while also supporting carbon capture and more circular approaches to manufacturing.
