{"id":31312,"date":"2026-06-15T07:04:31","date_gmt":"2026-06-15T07:04:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=31312"},"modified":"2026-06-15T07:04:31","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T07:04:31","slug":"swinney-heads-to-kentucky-for-whisky-talks-daily-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=31312","title":{"rendered":"Swinney heads to Kentucky for whisky talks \u2013 Daily Business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/John-Swinney-at-hustings-event-at-Gogarburn.png\" alt=\"John Swinney\" class=\"wp-image-193579 lazyload\" style=\"width:836px;height:auto\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"794\" height=\"542\" src=\"https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/John-Swinney-at-hustings-event-at-Gogarburn.png\" alt=\"John Swinney\" class=\"wp-image-193579 lazyload\" style=\"width:836px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/John-Swinney-at-hustings-event-at-Gogarburn.png 794w, https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/John-Swinney-at-hustings-event-at-Gogarburn-300x205.png 300w, https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/John-Swinney-at-hustings-event-at-Gogarburn-768x524.png 768w, https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/John-Swinney-at-hustings-event-at-Gogarburn-600x410.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 794px) 100vw, 794px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>John Swinney: heading to Kentucky (pic: DB Media Services)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">John Swinney will visit Kentucky today to build on US president Donald Trump\u2019s pledge to remove the 10% tariff on Scotch whisky.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">After celebrating Scotland\u2019s World Cup win against Haiti in Boston over the weekend Mr Swinney is heading west to continue his meetings with business leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Scotland exports more whisky to the US than any other country, worth around \u00a3933 million, and Mr Trump was taken with Mr Swinney highlighting its relationship with the US bourbon sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking ahead of his visit, Mr Swinney said: \u201cScotch whisky and Kentucky bourbon share a deep, long-standing connection \u2013 they\u2019re two of the world\u2019s great spirits and of high value to their respective economies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery year, millions of used bourbon barrels make their way from Kentucky to Scotland, where they\u2019re used to age some of the world\u2019s finest Scotch whiskies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe relationship between these two great spirits industries is genuinely symbiotic \u2013 each one helps make the other better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Trump announced\u00a0that tariffs would be removed from Scotch whisky\u00a0imports just before the SNP won a fifth consecutive term in office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">He and Mr Swinney held talks on tariffs in the White House last year which the First Minister has referenced in claims that his personal intervention has been key to the lowering of tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">During his visit to Kentucky, the First Minister will co-host a lunch with key representatives from the US spirits industry, visit Kentucky Cooperage and Kentucky Bourbon Barrel, and tour a distillery with members of the Congressional Bourbon Caucus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">On Friday he met Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, undertook a tour of Harvard University, and met business leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Minister for Maree Todd is due to travel to Miami for Scotland\u2019s final group match against Brazil next week.
