The Art Deco former C&A building on Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, is to be converted into a boutique hotel, under plans announced today.<\/p>\n
Built in 1929, the building was originally home to the Dutch clothing giant, and was latterly occupied by Dunnes Stores until 2017, remaining vacant since then.<\/p>\n
A 132-bed hotel is proposed with an entrance on Cambridge Street and commercial units along the building\u2019s Sauchiehall Street frontage.<\/p>\n
The plan includes a three-storey extension with a rooftop terrace, designed to complement the existing architecture and support the building\u2019s long- term viability.<\/p>\n
City architecture practice Haus is leading the design team on behalf of a private investor. <\/p>\n
Co-founder Murray Henderson said: \u201cThis is a significant building in the story of Sauchiehall Street and one that holds many memories for generations of Glaswegians.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur approach has been shaped by a respect for its architectural character, historic significance, and prominent role within the city centre. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe proposals are founded on a conservation-led strategy that prioritises the retention, repair and adaptation of the existing building. <\/p>\n
\u201cRather than replacing what is already here, we are seeking to give the building a sustainable new future that supports the ongoing renewal of Sauchiehall Street while celebrating its distinctive Art Deco heritage.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe hope the project can contribute positively to the continued evolution of Sauchiehall Street by bringing a much-loved landmark back into active use, helping to reinforce the vitality and character of this part of the city and support economic growth with the creation of new jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n
A planning application is expected to be submitted in late summer.<\/p>\n
An information event will be open to the public between 2pm and 6pm on 17 June at Edward House, directly opposite the former C&A building.<\/p>\n
