He made a successful application for legal aid on 30 Apri last year, while still registered as an owner of the villa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Some of his assets were frozen in June 2024 after he was arrested as part of\u00a0Operation Branchform, the police investigation into the SNP\u2019s finances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">His lawyers have indicated that he will offer to repay the stolen money with his frozen assets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Stephen Kerr, the Scottish Conservative justice spokesman, questioned how Murrell was allowed\u00a0legal aid while owning a holiday home\u00a0in Portugal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis absolutely stinks and undermines public confidence in Scotland\u2019s legal aid system,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Scottish Labour\u00a0deputy leader Jackie Baillie said: \u201cThis is a national scandal.
