Transnet Pipelines (TPL) on Tuesday welcomed the arrest of a suspected fuel theft syndicate member linked to cases across several provinces, as authorities intensify efforts to curb losses from pipeline tampering.<\/p>\n
The suspect, Sam Chavani Maswanganye, was arrested on 30 March in Witbank following an intelligence-led operation conducted under Project Impi, led by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.<\/p>\n

Authorities said the arrest forms part of broader investigations into organised fuel theft affecting pipeline infrastructure in Gauteng, North West and the Free State.<\/p>\n
A property search uncovered equipment commonly associated with pipeline tampering, including high-pressure hoses, pipe fittings, drilling tools and a generator. Two vehicles believed to be linked to the activities were also seized.<\/p>\n
Containers with traces of petroleum products were recovered, with samples sent for forensic analysis.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis arrest reflects the strength of law enforcement in tackling fuel theft, which remains a serious threat to critical infrastructure and surrounding communities,\u201d said Sibongiseni Khathi of TPL.<\/p>\n
Maswanganye appeared in the Sasolburg Magistrate\u2019s Court on 1 April, where the matter was postponed to 9 April for further investigation and a bail application. He remains in custody.<\/p>\n
\nFuel theft has become a growing concern for the energy and logistics sector, with pipeline tampering disrupting supply and increasing operational risks.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Transnet said investigations are ongoing, with additional suspects expected to be linked to the broader syndicate network.<\/p>\n
