As AI makes inroads into the worlds of editorial and media, websites are scrambling to establish ground rules for its usage. This week, Wikipedia banned the use of AI-generated text by its editors \u2014 although it stopped short of banning AI outright from the site\u2019s editorial processes.<\/p>\n
In a recent policy change<\/a>, the site now states that \u201cthe use of LLMs to generate or rewrite article content is prohibited.\u201d This new language updates and clarifies previous, vaguer language<\/a> that stated that LLMs \u201cshould not be used to generate new Wikipedia articles from scratch.\u201d<\/p>\n AI in Wikipedia articles has become a contentious issue<\/a> among the site\u2019s sprawling, volunteer-driven community of editors. 404 Media reports that<\/a> the new policy, which was put to a vote by the site\u2019s editors, garnered majority support \u2014 40 to 2.<\/p>\n That said, the new policy still makes room for continued AI use in some editorial processes. <\/p>\n \u201cEditors are permitted to use LLMs to suggest\u00a0basic copyedits\u00a0to their own writing, and to incorporate some of them after human review, provided the LLM does not introduce content of its own,\u201d the new policy states. \u201cCaution is required, because LLMs can go beyond what you ask of them and change the meaning of the text such that it is not\u00a0supported by the sources cited.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
