Elon Musk recently outlined ambitious plans for a chip-building collaboration between his companies Tesla and SpaceX.<\/p>\n
Bloomberg reports<\/a> that Musk shared his plans on Saturday night at an event in downtown Austin, Texas, with a photo suggesting that what Musk is calling the \u201cTerafab\u201d facility will be built near Tesla\u2019s Austin headquarters and \u201cgigafactory.\u201d<\/p>\n Musk said he\u2019s pursuing this project because semiconductor manufacturers aren\u2019t making chips quickly enough for his companies\u2019 artificial intelligence and robotics needs: \u201cWe either build the Terafab or we don\u2019t have the chips, and we need the chips, so we build the Terafab.\u201d<\/p>\n The goal is to manufacture chips that can support 100 to 200 gigawatts of computing power per year on Earth, along with a terawatt in space<\/a>, Musk said. He did not offer a timeline for these plans.<\/p>\n As Bloomberg noted, Musk does not have a background in semiconductor manufacturing, but he does have a history of overpromising<\/a> on goals<\/a> and timelines<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
