A French Navy officer went for a run on the deck of the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier and uploaded his workout to Strava, inadvertently leaking the location of the nuclear-powered<\/a> warship as it heads to the Middle East.<\/p>\n

First reported<\/a> by French newspaper Le Monde, the story is not an anomaly \u2014 this popular fitness tracking app has proven to be a privacy nightmare<\/a> before.<\/p>\n

By default, accounts on the social fitness app are set to public, publishing your route any time you log a workout. Strava data has previously been used to locate military bases around the world<\/a>. In 2024, Le Monde uncovered French President Emmanuel Macron\u2019s whereabouts<\/a> by searching for the Strava accounts of his bodyguards, who uploaded public workout data while traveling with him.<\/p>\n

Macron had publicly announced<\/a> the carrier\u2019s deployment, so its movement through the Mediterranean was already known. But obviously, the French military is still put at serious risk when an officer telegraphs its precise location. A representative for the French Armed Forces told Le Monde that the officer\u2019s behavior \u201cdoes not comply with current guidelines,\u201d which \u201csailors are regularly made aware of.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Strava did not respond to TechCrunch\u2019s request for comment before publication, but let this serve as a reminder for all; even if you\u2019re not in the military, it\u2019s probably worth setting your Strava account to private.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
