{"id":26753,"date":"2026-03-06T04:04:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T04:04:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=26753"},"modified":"2026-03-06T04:04:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T04:04:12","slug":"the-worlds-largest-tech-gathering-is-talking-about-accountability-laundering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=26753","title":{"rendered":"The world\u2019s largest tech gathering is talking about \u2018accountability laundering\u2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p>Summer Yue\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0the most famous employee at Meta.\u00a0The director\u00a0of \u201csuperintelligence\u00a0alignment and\u00a0safety\u00a0research\u201d\u00a0posts pictures\u00a0of herself\u00a0walking\u00a0her\u00a0dog on the beach and messages about testing\u00a0the honesty of\u00a0AI assistants.\u00a0She has a modest number of followers on social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>But for one day in\u00a0February, Yue\u00a0became the most\u00a0talked about person at Meta.\u00a0Not for launching a remarkable new product\u00a0or announcing a breakthrough in agentic AI, but rather for being caught out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing humbles you like telling your\u00a0OpenClaw,\u00a0\u2018Confirm before acting\u2019\u00a0and watching it speedrun deleting your inbox,\u201d Yue wrote on X\u2014a post that now has close to 10\u00a0million\u00a0views. \u201cI\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0stop it from my phone. I had to <em>run<\/em> to my Mac mini like I was defusing a bomb.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>OpenClaw\u00a0is an\u00a0\u201cautonomous agent\u201d\u2014an artificial intelligence product that\u00a0can perform tasks independently. A\u00a0darling of Silicon Valley, it\u00a0offers to be\u00a0your\u00a0constant admin assistant, the \u201cAI that actually does\u00a0things.\u201d\u00a0Give it access to your diary, your emails, your\u00a0life,\u00a0and it will save you time and stress,\u00a0the product\u2019s\u00a0developers\u00a0claim.\u00a0The first sentence on the\u00a0OpenClaw\u00a0website\u00a0reads: \u201cClears\u00a0your inbox,\u00a0sends\u00a0emails, manages your calendar, checks you in for flights.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yue\u00a0admitted she had made a \u201crookie mistake.\u201d\u00a0She\u00a0tested\u00a0the assistant\u00a0on\u00a0a\u00a0small \u201ctoy\u201d email list and then\u00a0released\u00a0it on her whole inbox which was too large for the\u00a0guardrail\u00a0prompts\u00a0(\u201cCheck with me\u201d)\u00a0she had used for the\u00a0pilot.\u00a0But if even a director of superintelligence at Meta is having difficulty navigating the world of agentic AI\u00a0and \u201ccompaction effects,\u201d what hope is there for the rest of us?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Read more: Qualcomm CEO: \u2018Resistance is futile\u2019 as 6G mobile revolution approaches<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is a vital conversation, so important that at\u00a0Mobile\u00a0World Congress this week in Barcelona\u2014the largest technology gathering in the world\u2014Yue\u2019s snafu was debated\u00a0on the main stage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, everybody here at World Congress has been chatting about\u00a0OpenClaw\u00a0and how we can use agents,\u201d said Kate Crawford,\u00a0research professor at the University of Southern California.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut then we saw\u00a0Meta\u2019s\u00a0head of AI safety\u00a0use\u00a0OpenClaw, and it\u00a0deleted\u00a0her entire inbox.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0the head of safety for\u00a0Meta.\u00a0So,\u00a0if\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0having problems,\u00a0I think we all\u00a0have to\u00a0be asking: \u2018How do we make sure that these systems are really hardened? How do we make sure that\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0rigorously tested? How do we make sure that we can\u00a0actually\u00a0delegate\u00a0to\u00a0them in a trusted way?\u2019\u00a0And\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0really the hardest problem to face, right?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Right.\u00a0When\u00a0something goes wrong, who is responsible?\u00a0The user? The developer? The lack of regulation?\u00a0When the reality of AI clashes with the promise of AI, what do we\u00a0do?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yue\u2019s inbox may only be of supreme importance to her. When it comes to the relationship\u00a0between technology and, say, our health,\u00a0or,\u00a0Anthropic take note, the defense of the nation, then that is\u00a0a very different\u00a0matter. It wasn\u2019t long ago that Grok, xAI\u2019s artificial intelligence bot, was casually \u201cundressing\u201d images of women and girls to the disgust of millions. The threat of government- and state-led action finally brought a change of approach.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cHow do we make sure that these systems are really hardened? How do we make sure that\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0rigorously tested?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite>Kate Crawford,\u00a0research professor at the University of Southern California<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHow do you actually build in accountability?\u201d Crawford asked. \u201cThis is the thing that we all want. If\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0going to start using agents to book your flights and arrange your medical appointments and even more intimate and trusted activities in your everyday life, you want to know that the information is going to be protected.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo how do you test for that? How do you ensure\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0happening? If we look at\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0happened in the last 10 years in the tech space, unfortunately\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0seen a lot of accountability laundering\u2014which is when companies can say, \u2018Well, I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0know.
