Canal+ SA will discontinue the loss-making Showmax streaming service developed by South African pay-TV operator MultiChoice Group, which the French firm bought last year.<\/p>\n
This decision comes after \u201csubstantial annual losses experienced by the Showmax business\u201d that \u201cproved unsustainable,\u201d the operator said in a statement Thursday. Ending the service won\u2019t result in any job cuts, with the group providing staff with various transition options, it said.<\/p>\n

Canal+ said the decision is consistent with its plan to deploy its in-house streaming platform, which includes deals with AppleTV and Warner Bros Discovery\u2019s HBO Max, to African consumers it didn\u2019t service before the MultiChoice deal.<\/p>\n

Canal+ gained control of MultiChoice \u2013 part owner of streaming service Showmax with Comcast Corp \u2013\u00a0 late last year in a deal that valued the African platform at about R52.7 billion. The Johannesburg-based firm\u2019s operations are mainly in the south and east of the continent as well as Nigeria and Ghana, while the French company already has a presence throughout francophone western Africa.<\/p>\n
