Air France announced Wednesday it will suspend flights for several weeks between Paris and Havana given\u00a0Cuba\u2019s fuel shortage\u00a0and its impact on tourism and other economic activity.<\/p>\n

The airline said flights leaving from Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport to Cuba\u2019s capital will be suspended starting March 28 and should resume June 15.<\/p>\n

Those flights are currently stopping in the\u00a0Bahamas\u00a0on return trips to refuel, according to Air France. There was no immediate reaction from Cuban authorities.<\/p>\n

The suspension hits Cubans on the Caribbean island especially hard. They relied on such flights to reach Europe since they are unable to go via the United States.<\/p>\n

Cuba\u2019s government\u00a0notified airlines and pilots\u00a0on Feb. 8 that jet fuel would not be available at nine airports across the island, including Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed International Airport in Havana, until March 11.<\/p>\n

Cuba\u2019s tourism industry\u00a0is withering\u00a0amid severe blackouts, dwindling oil reserves and\u00a0heightened tensions\u00a0with the United States. The island has been among Washington\u2019s bitterest adversaries for decades.<\/p>\n

Critical oil shipments from Venezuela\u00a0ceased after the U.S. attacked the South American country and arrested its leader in early January.<\/p>\n

U.S. President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0later threatened tariffs on any country that would sell or ship oil to Cuba.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Treasury Department has since announced that it would authorize licensed companies to resell Venezuelan oil to Cuba\u2019s private sector, but\u00a0the island\u2019s economic and energetic crises\u00a0are expected to persist.<\/p>\n

Other airlines have halted service to Cuba, including Air Canada. It announced Feb. 9 that it was suspending service until further notice. It operated on average 16 weekly flights to four destinations across Cuba from Toronto and Montreal, according to the airline.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
