{"id":26345,"date":"2026-03-03T15:49:05","date_gmt":"2026-03-03T15:49:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=26345"},"modified":"2026-03-03T15:49:05","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T15:49:05","slug":"ferries-deal-for-ferguson-as-harbour-nationalised-daily-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/microvibenews.com\/?p=26345","title":{"rendered":"Ferries deal for Ferguson as harbour nationalised \u2013 Daily Business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Ferguson-Marine-aerial-view.png\" alt=\"Ferguson-Marine-aerial-view\" class=\"wp-image-134605 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"794\" height=\"507\" src=\"https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Ferguson-Marine-aerial-view.png\" alt=\"Ferguson-Marine-aerial-view\" class=\"wp-image-134605 lazyload\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Ferguson-Marine-aerial-view.png 794w, https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Ferguson-Marine-aerial-view-300x192.png 300w, https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Ferguson-Marine-aerial-view-768x490.png 768w, https:\/\/dailybusinessgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Ferguson-Marine-aerial-view-600x383.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 794px) 100vw, 794px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Ferguson Marine will build more vessels<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Troubled Ferguson Marine shipyard on the Clyde has secured a contract from the Scottish Government for four vessels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The state-owned yard at Port Glasgow will build two small ferries as well as a marine research vessel and a marine protection vessel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The decision, announced in the Scottish Parliament, is subject to a due diligence process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop said another contract, to replace the CalMac ferry MV Lord of the Isles, would not be directly awarded, but would go to a competitive tendering process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Ms Hyslop also announced that Ardrossan harbour is to be nationalised with the Scottish government\u2019s ferries and ports agency expected to finalise the deal this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">She said negotiations between Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) and owner Peel Ports have now concluded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The government has been forced to buy the harbour because new CalMac ferries ordered by CMAL for the Arran route are too big to berth safely at the existing facilities and it needs extensive redevelopment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Ms Hyslop did not confirm how much the sale would cost but said negotiations had been \u201ccomplex\u201d but would bring \u201cwider benefits\u201d to ferry services in the long term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes told parliament that the award of the four-ferry contract would help unlock up to \u00a314.2m of promised funding to modernise the Port Glasgow shipyard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The contract for the MV Lord Of the Isles would be put out to open tender in the next few weeks with a view to placing an order with a shipyard later this year, despite calls for it also to be directly awarded to Ferguson Marine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Ms Forbes told parliament: \u201cWe are strengthening ferry resilience and connectivity for communities that rely on dependable services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cAt the same time, our plans for new vessel awards would support skilled employment and industrial capability in Inverclyde, where Ferguson Marine remains an essential part of the local economy and a shipyard of national industrial importance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Ferguson\u2019s, the last shipyard on the lower Clyde, employs about 300 workers, including about 50 apprentices.
