U.S. Central Command, which oversees the Middle East, announced the deaths in a post on X but did not say when and where they occurred. The statement said \u201cseveral others sustained minor shrapnel injuries and concussions\u201d and were going to return to duty.<\/p>\n

Central Command described the situation \u201cas fluid\u201d and said it would withhold the identities of the service members who were killed for 24 hours after their families were notified.<\/p>\n

The U.S. military also denied Iranian claims that\u00a0the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier\u00a0was struck with ballistic missiles, saying on X that the \u201cmissiles launched didn\u2019t even come close.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump had warned\u00a0that American troops could be killed or injured in the operation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe lives of courageous American heroes may be lost, and we may have casualties,\u201d the Republican president said in a video address released early Saturday. \u201cThat often happens in war. But we\u2019re doing this not for now. We\u2019re doing this for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the U.S.-Israeli strikes that killed Iran\u2019s supreme leader,\u00a0Ayatollah Ali Khamenei,\u00a0and other leaders, Iran\u2019s counterattacks have struck U.S. bases in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard has threatened to launch its \u201cmost intense offensive operation\u201d ever targeting Israeli and American military installations.<\/p>\n

Before the strikes, Trump had\u00a0built up the largest U.S. military presencein the Middle East in decades. The arrival of the Lincoln and three accompanying guided-missile destroyers at the end of January bolstered the number of warships in the region.<\/p>\n

The world\u2019s largest aircraft carrier,\u00a0the USS Gerald R. Ford, and four accompanying destroyers later were\u00a0dispatched from the Caribbean Seato head to the Middle East.<\/p>\n

The Ford was part of\u00a0the U.S. raid in Venezuela\u00a0that\u00a0captured leader Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, who was brought to New York to face\u00a0drug trafficking charges. The operation in January claimed no American lives but left seven U.S. troops with gunshot wounds and shrapnel-related injuries.<\/p>\n

One of those injured\u00a0received the Medal of Honor\u00a0during Trump\u2019s State of the Union address last week. Trump said Army Chief Warrant Officer 5 Eric Slover piloted the lead CH-47 Chinook helicopter that descended on the \u201cheavily protected military fortress\u201d where Maduro was staying.<\/p>\n

Trump has launched several military operations during his second term, including\u00a0strikes on members of the Islamic State group\u00a0in Syria in retaliation for an\u00a0ambush attack that killed two U.S. troops\u00a0and an American civilian interpreter in December.<\/p>\n

The U.S. military has also\u00a0struck IS forces in Nigeria, after Trump accused the West African country\u2019s government of failing to rein in\u00a0the targeting of Christians.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
